Synopsis

Democracy came into the Western World to the tune of sweet, soft music. There was, at the start, no harsh bawling from below; there was only a dulcet twittering from above. Democratic man thus began as an ideal being, full of ineffable virtues and romantic wrongs—in brief, as Rousseau’s noble savage in smock and jerkin, brought out of the tropical wilds to shame the lords and masters of the civilized lands. The fact continues to have important consequences to this day. It remains impossible, as it was in the Eighteenth Century, to separate the democratic idea from the theory that there is a mystical merit, an esoteric and ineradicable rectitude, in the man at the bottom of the scale—that inferiority, by some strange magic, becomes a sort of superiority—nay, the superiority of superiorities. Everywhere on earth, save where the enlightenment of the modern age is confessedly in transient eclipse, the movement is toward the completer and more enamoured enfranchisement of the lower orders. Down there, one hears, lies a deep, illimitable reservoir of righteousness and wisdom, unpolluted by the corruption of privilege. What baffles statesmen is to be solved by the people, instantly and by a sort of seraphic intuition. Their yearnings are pure; they alone are capable of a perfect patriotism; in them is the only hope of peace and happiness on this lugubrious ball. The cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy!

A military historian’s account of the German fortifications at Omaha Beach explains the huge American losses during this key WWII conflict.   In this fresh look at D-Day—one of World War II's pivotal battles—author Steven Zaloga draws on original research, including recently discovered German artillery maps, and offers well-supported evidence for why the U.S. Army suffered such enormous casualties on Omaha Beach.  Focusing on Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, who oversaw German defenses in Normandy, Zaloga covers little-known aspects of the war, such as the German patrols who were tasked with shooting down pigeons the French resistance used to send messages to the Allies, offering up conclusions that are sure to spark debate.

The rise of the Roman Empire marks one of the most transformative periods in world history. Emerging from humble beginnings as a small settlement on the banks of the Tiber River, Rome grew to dominate the ancient world through a combination of military prowess, political innovation, and cultural assimilation. This chapter explores the foundations of Roman power, the empire’s expansive reach across continents, and the key figures who shaped its rise.
Rome's origins date back to the 8th century BCE, with its legendary founding attributed to Romulus and Remus. Initially a monarchy, Rome evolved into a republic around 509 BCE after the overthrow of the last Etruscan king. This transition marked the beginning of a new political era, where power rested with the Senate and elected magistrates. The republican framework, characterized by a system of checks and balances, laid the foundation for Rome's expansive ambitions. As the republic matured, it developed a complex legal system and a robust military structure that would be instrumental in its growth.
One of Rome’s most significant advantages was its strategic location. Positioned at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Rome became a hub for trade and communication. The city's ability to integrate conquered territories through road networks and infrastructure projects further solidified its control. Additionally, the Roman practice of granting varying levels of citizenship to conquered peoples helped maintain loyalty and stability within the expanding state.

Jean Strouse's Family Romance: John Singer Sargent and the Wertheimers looks at twelve portraits of one English family painted by the expatriate American artist at the height of his career—and at the intersections of all these lives with the sparkle and strife of the Edwardian age.

In commissioning this grand series of paintings, Asher Wertheimer, an eminent London art dealer of German-Jewish descent, became Sargent's greatest private patron and close friend. The Wertheimers worked with Rothschilds and royals, plutocrats and dukes—as did Sargent. Asher left most of his Sargent portraits to the National Gallery in London, a gift that elicited censure as well as praise: it was a new thing for a family of Jews to appear alongside the Anglo-Saxon aristocrats and dignitaries painted by earlier masters.

Strouse's account, set primarily in England around the turn of the twentieth century, takes in the declining fortunes of the British aristocracy and the dramatic rise of new power and wealth on both sides of the Atlantic. It travels back through hundreds of years to the Habsburg court in Vienna and forward to fascist Italy in the 1930s. Its depictions of Sargent, his sitters, their friendships and circles, and the portraits themselves light up a period that saw tumultuous social change and the birth of the modern art market.

The Heat and the Fury - On the...

As a journalist on the climate security beat, Peter Schwartzstein has been chased by kidnappers, badly beaten, detained by police, and told, in no uncertain terms, that he was no longer welcome in certain countries. Yet these personal brushes with violence are simply a hint of the conflict simmering in our warming world.

Schwartzstein has visited ravaged Iraqi towns where ISIS used drought as a recruiting tool and weapon of terror. And he has heard the fear in the voices of women from around the world who say their husbands' tempers flare when the temperature ticks up.

In The Heat and the Fury, he not only puts listeners on the frontlines of climate violence but gives us the context to make sense of seemingly senseless acts. As Schwartzstein deftly shows, climate change is often the spark that ignites long smoldering fires, the extra shove that pushes individuals, communities, and even nations over the line between frustration and lethal fury. What, he asks, can ratchet down the aggression?

Schwartzstein's incisive analysis of geopolitics, unparalleled on-the-ground reporting, and keen sense of human nature offer the clearest picture to date of the violence that threatens us all.
