Beschreibung

The book's protagonist is an amateur inventor or scientist living in London who is never named; he is identified simply as The Time Traveller. Having demonstrated to friends using a miniature model that time is a fourth dimension, and that a suitable apparatus can move back and forth in this fourth dimension, he builds a full-scale model capable of carrying himself. He sets off on a journey into the future.

The Hermit of Mars by Stephen Bartholomew - He was the oldest man on Mars ... in fact, the only one!
When Martin Devere was 23 and still working on his Master's, he was hurt by a woman. It was then that he decided that the only things that were worthwhile in life were pure art and pure science. That, of course, is another story, but it may explain why he chose to become an archeologist in the first place.
Now he was the oldest human being on Mars. He was 91. For many years, in fact, he had been the only human being on Mars. Up until today.
He looked through the transparent wall of his pressurized igloo at the puff of dust in the desert where the second rocket had come down. Earth and Mars were just past conjunction, and the regular automatic supply rocket had landed two days ago. As usual, Martin Devere, taking his own good time about it, had unloaded the supplies, keeping the things he really needed and throwing away the useless stuff like the latest microfilmed newspapers and magazines, the taped TV shows and concerts. As payment for his groceries he had then reloaded the rocket with the written reports he had accumulated since the last conjunction, plus a few artifacts.
Then he had pushed a button and sent the rocket on its way again, back to Earth. He didn't mind writing the reports. Most of them were rubbish anyway, but they seemed to keep the people back at the Institute happy. He did mind the artifacts. It seemed wrong to remove them, though he sent only the less valuable ones back. But perhaps it couldn't be helped. One time, the supply rocket had failed to return when he pushed its red button—the thing was still sitting out there in the desert, slowly rusting. Martin Devere had happily unloaded the artifacts and put them back where they belonged. It wasn't his fault.

High above Earth, Colonel Hal Gascoigne commands Satellite Vehicle One, a one-man orbital station carrying catastrophic authority. When voices begin speaking to him—voices that should not exist—Gascoigne is confronted with orders that defy logic, protocol, and sanity itself. The isolation of space becomes a pressure chamber as fragments of routine turn unreliable and the line between perception and reality erodes.
James Blish constructs a tense psychological standoff where the greatest threat is not enemy weapons, but the human mind under unbearable responsibility. As Civilian Intelligence Group races to intervene, King of the Hill explores guilt, authority, and the terrifying consequences of unquestioned obedience. The story unfolds with deliberate intensity, forcing the listener to confront how close absolute control can drift toward catastrophe.
James Blish was one of the most intellectually rigorous voices of mid-20th-century science fiction. Best known for A Case of Conscience, which won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1959, Blish frequently examined the ethical and philosophical dimensions of advanced technology and power. His work often placed human psychology at the center of cosmic stakes.
In addition to his acclaimed novels, Blish contributed influential short fiction that questioned military doctrine, political decision-making, and moral certainty. King of the Hill exemplifies his ability to fuse high-concept science fiction with deeply human tension, making him a lasting pillar of classic science fiction literature.

Candy Crone is a Christmas Short Story standalone, Book 6.5, in the Hawthorne University Witch Series.
While I’m enjoying a spicy caramel apple surprise at our local ice cream parlor, an old lady in rags rambles nonsense about candy canes to children waiting for Santa. That distracts me from prepping my young friend Cat for her college interview at Hawthorne University.
Christmas turns into creepy Halloween when all the local children, including Cat, disappear in the woods. Bryce and I search our forest but become spellbound. All this voracious casting heralds the arrival of a new witch in town. The Candy Crone.
As the Hawthorne Witch, I hold great power, but with my unborn baby kicking, the witch exploits my sins and vices through gluttony. Am I nothing more than my appetites and power as the Hawthorne Witch? Or can I accomplish something greater? If I can’t sort my stuff out, Cat, my unborn baby, Chandra, and all these innocent kids living in Hawthorne are toast.
Cadence Hawthorne returns in this Christmas novella taking place after Shadow Cast, book 6, in The Hawthorne University Witch Series. Candy Crone is a complete self-contained novella not ending in cliffhangers. Some spoilers cannot be avoided, but the story is a STANDALONE book that can be enjoyed without reading the preceding novels.
Content Warning: Candy Crone contains profanity, adult situations and, of course, witchcraft.
