Summary

In "Russia in the Shadows," H. G. Wells embarks on a profound exploration of the socio-political landscape of early 20th-century Russia, presenting a vivid analysis of the tumultuous events following the Bolshevik Revolution. Through a blend of journalism and speculative fiction, Wells employs a compelling narrative style that interweaves personal observation with historical commentary, effectively capturing the ideological ferment of a nation in transformation. Written with an acute awareness of the prevailing global tensions, this work provides an insightful context that reflects the uncertainties of post-World War I Europe. H. G. Wells, renowned as a pioneer of science fiction, possessed a keen interest in social issues and political realities, which significantly informed his writing. His experiences as a socialist and an observer of international affairs, coupled with his travels in Russia, shaped his understanding of the country's complexities and the revolutionary fervor of its populace. This intimate perspective allows Wells to challenge prevailing narratives and illustrate the lived experiences of ordinary Russians caught in a whirlwind of change. Recommended for scholars and general readers alike, "Russia in the Shadows" stands as an essential text for understanding the early Soviet era's intricacies. Wells's meticulous research and evocative prose invite readers to engage with a critical moment in history, making this unabridged edition a vital addition to the library of anyone interested in political thought, literature, and the legacy of Russian history.

The Ashtray - (Or the Man Who...

    Errol Morris

In 1972, philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn threw an ashtray at Errol Morris. This book is the result. At the time, Morris was a graduate student. Now we know him as one of the most celebrated and restlessly probing filmmakers of our time, the creator of such classics of documentary investigation as The Thin Blue Line. Kuhn was—and, posthumously, remains—a star in his field and author of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a landmark book that introduced the concept of "paradigm shifts" to the larger culture. And Morris thought the idea was bunk.

The Ashtray tells why—and in doing so, it makes a powerful case for Morris's way of viewing the world, and the centrality to that view of a fundamental conception of the necessity of truth. "For me," Morris writes, "truth is about the relationship between language and the world: a correspondence idea of truth." He has no patience for philosophical systems that aim for internal coherence and disdain the world itself. Morris wants to establish as clearly as possible what we know and can say about the world, reality, history, our actions, and interactions. It's the fundamental desire that animates his filmmaking. Truth may be slippery, but that doesn't mean we have to grease its path of escape through philosophical evasions. Rather, Morris argues, it is our duty to do everything we can to establish and support it.

The following are the live recordings of William Butler Yeats reading and discussing the inspiration behind three of his most famous poems, "The Lake Island of Innisfree," "The Fiddler of Dooney," and "Song of the Old Mother." Yeats made these three recordings in 1932, 1934, and on October 28, 1937 when he was 72.

"The Lake Island of Innisfree" is a twelve-line poem comprising three quatrains, written in 1888 and first published in the National Observer in 1890. The poem is featured in Irish passports. "The Fiddler of Dooney" was first published in 1892. The word "Dooney" refers to Dooney Rock, a small hill overlooking Lough Gill near Sligo. The central theme of poem is the celebration of life and the joy that comes from living it to the fullest. "Song of the Old Mother" first appeared in The Wind Among the Reeds anthology, published in 1899. Written in first person, the poem echoes Yeats' fascination with the Irish peasantry, explaining the difficult chores and struggles of an aged, unfortunate woman.
