Beschreibung

In "Certain Personal Matters," H. G. Wells presents a collection of autobiographical essays that blur the lines between fiction and reality, inviting readers into the intimate spaces of his personal life, thoughts, and philosophies. Written in a candid style characteristic of early 20th-century confessional literature, the book captures Wells' reflections on diverse topics ranging from his childhood to his views on society and the human condition. Contextually, this work emerges from the backdrop of the Victorian era's transition into modernity, revealing the profound impacts of the social and political upheavals of the time on Wells' worldview. H. G. Wells, often heralded as the father of science fiction, was also a social critic and a keen observer of the human experience. His background as a teacher and a journalist informed his writing style, while his own experiences of class struggle and personal relationships provided rich material for his narratives. These essays reflect his desire to reconcile his scientific inclinations with his vivid imaginations and deeply held beliefs about social progress. For readers seeking a deeper understanding of Wells beyond his speculative fiction, "Certain Personal Matters" offers a compelling insight into the mind of one of the 20th century's most influential writers. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in the interplay between an author's personal experiences and their literary output, making it a valuable addition to the library of both casual readers and scholars alike.

One woman’s dramatic account of her stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, exploring the prejudice and mistreatment of women in combat zones. Not even old enough to drink, Corporal Savannah Cannon is a young enlisted United States Marine deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010. As a tactical data networking specialist, she is sent away from everyone she knows and attached to a Regimental Combat Team where women are not allowed to repair communications. Her experiences over the next few months shed light on the unique and difficult positions women are placed in when supporting combat roles, while offering a raw look at the painful choices women must sometimes make. Cannon finds herself in a combat zone, ostracized from family, friends, and even her fellow Marines as the men are told to avoid her. The connections she makes are born from trauma and desperation and the choices she makes will echo throughout many lives. Corporal Cannon is not the story of a heroine; it is the hard-hitting account of just one of the flawed individuals who make up the United States’ fighting forces. Mistakes in the battlefield can have dire consequences, personally and professionally. Reflecting on her time in service, the author weaves a story of past and present, and the healing that can come with admitting our mistakes and moving past them.

It might surprise you who’s a fan of poetry — when it meets them where they are.
Before he became an award-winning writer and poet, Brian Sonia-Wallace set up a typewriter on the street with a sign that said “Poetry Store” and discovered something surprising: all over America, people want poems. An amateur busker at first, Brian asked countless strangers, “What do you need a poem about?” To his surprise, passersby opened up to share their deepest yearnings, loves, and heartbreaks. Hundreds of them. Then thousands. Around the nation, Brian’s poetry crusade drew countless converts from all walks of life.
In The Poetry of Strangers, Brian tells the story of his cross-country journey in a series of heartfelt and insightful essays. From Minnesota to Tennessee, California to North Dakota, Brian discovered that people aren’t so afraid of poetry when it’s telling their stories. In “dying” towns flourish vibrant artistic spirits and fascinating American characters who often pass under the radar, from the Mall of America’s mall walkers to retirees on Amtrak to self-proclaimed witches in Salem.
In a time of unprecedented loneliness and isolation, Brian’s journey shows how art can be a vital bridge to community in surprising places. Conventional wisdom says Americans don’t want to talk to each other, but according to this poet-for-hire, everyone is just dying to be heard.
Thought-provoking, moving, and eye-opening, The Poetry of Strangers is an unforgettable portrait of America told through the hidden longings of one person at a time, by one of our most important voices today. The fault lines and conflicts which divide us fall away when we remember to look, in every stranger, for poetry.

Mark Twain's (Burlesque) Autobiography and First Romance, a short volume, published by Sheldon & Co., NY in 1871, is Mark Twain's third book. It consists of two stories - First Romance, which had originally appeared in The Express in 1870, and A Burlesque Autobiography (bearing no relationship to Twain's actual life), which first appeared in Twain's Memoranda contributions to the Galaxy. Rather, the content consists of a few short stories of fictional characters who are supposedly part of Twain's lineage. In the final passage, Twain develops the story to a point of crisis, and then abruptly ends the tale, saying:
“The truth is, I have got my hero (or heroine) into such a particularly close place, that I do not see how I am ever going to get him (or her) out of it again-and therefore I will wash my hands of the whole business, and leave that person to get out the best way that offers-or else stay there. I thought it was going to be easy enough to straighten out that little difficulty, but it looks different now. ”With that, Twain's "Autobiography" ends. The illustrations form an interesting aspect of this book. They have no relationship to the text of the book. Rather, they use cartoons illustrating the children's poem The House that Jack Built to lampoon the Erie Railroad Ring (the house) and its participants, Jay Gould, John T. Hoffman, and Jim Fisk. The book was not one of Twain's personal favorites. Two years after publication, he bought all of the printing plates of the book and destroyed them. (Introduction by Wikipedia)
