  Clotilde Augusta Inez Mary Graves was born on the 3rd June 1863 at Buttevant Castle, Co. Cork, to parents with military backgrounds. 
   
  At age nine, the family moved to Southsea in England for yet another military posting.  Her father’s postings gave her valuable experiences that would be put to good use in later years in some of her literary works. 
   
  She was educated at a Catholic convent in Lourdes before returning to London in 1884 to study art in Bloomsbury.  She worked part-time at the British Museum and the Royal Female School of Art and generated further income by drawing little pen-and-ink grotesques for the comic papers.  
   
  A few years later a chance meeting found her writing extra lyrics for a pantomime version of Puss in Boots.  She followed up with several financially successful plays, both in London and New York, and gained a measure of notoriety in one with the comparison of marriage and prostitution.   
   
  Despite her dramatic success she published her first novel in 1911 under the pseudonym of Richard Dehan which she continued to use for later works.  As well as novels and plays she published collections of short stories which glow with talent and invention. 
   
  She was an unusual figure in London society, wearing her hair short, taking on a masculine manner and cut of clothing, and smoking cigarettes in public when such traits were considered eccentric at best.  Add to this her admired collection of Chinese and Japanese trophies, her enthusiasm for fly-fishing and her riding of a tricycle and you have a perfect image of this fascinating writer. 
   
  Clotilde Graves died at the convent of Our Lady of Lourdes at Hatch End in Middlesex, on the 3rd December 1932.  She was 69.

  A collection of 18 pieces of writing, Shoes and Stockings by Louisa May Alcott comes with stories about war, love and other important topics, making readers laugh at times, bringing them to tears at other times, and always getting them to contemplate.    Louisa May Alcott was one of the most prolific American writers of the 19th century. She wrote novels and poems, and she published her letters written to her family while she was recovering from typhoid after she had started work as a nurse during the Civil War.She also wrote critical articles about hospital management and about the problems she encountered while she was working as a nurse, but what made her name widely known was her short stories.    Many of the female characters in the Shoes and Stockings stories are in fact figures inspired by the author's own life. Alcott's work was largely influenced by her education and her path in life – in her youth, she received education not only from her father, but also from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson and other influential figures of the age who were all family friends of the Alcotts.    Louisa May had to start earning her own money at a very young age – she worked as a seamstress, a governess and a teacher, too, experiences that appear in her writing as well. She was also an abolitionist, one of the first feminist writers of her times and a supporter of women's suffrage. She never married and never had children, but she knew and loved children – affection she expressed in her numerous children's stories.    This collection contains stories written for adults, young and old alike, and it includes two of Alcott's most popular pieces, a light-hearted story entitled Kitty's Class Day and Aunt Kipp, another masterfully written story about family and money (or rather, the lack of it).

  Bambi follows the life of the eponymous roe deer, from birth to maturity. Through the years Bambi meets friends, learns how to survive in the forest, finds love, and learns how to survive "He" - the name animals give to man. The novel gives a glimpse into forest life: dangerous, yet awe-inspiring; unforgiving, yet beautiful.
  Written by Felix Salten and published in 1923 in German, it was translated to English in 1928 by Whittaker Chambers. It is considered one of the first environmental novels, and in 1936 was banned by Nazi Germany for being a parable of the persecution of Jews in Europe.
  Although adapted into multiple movies, ballets, and plays, Bambi is perhaps most popularly remembered as the subject of Walt Disney's famous animated feature of the same name.
