Synopsis

Written by a graduate of Brown University and a Russian Linguist who served the U.S. Security Agency from 1965-1967, After the War is a sweeping narrative of Germany's transformation from a shattered nation told through one families journey through the ruins of defeat to an uncertain future. 
Through the intertwining lives of the Bruggermann siblings - Rupert, Heinrich, Sybille, and Renate - the novel explores the personal challenges and moral dilemmas faced by ordinary Germans in extraordinary times. 
After the War offers an intimate portrayal of a family grappling with their past while trying to forge a new future. The introduction of Hildegard Shornstein, a refugee from Dresden who rises from poverty to become a world-famous pianist, adds depth to the narrative, illustrating themes of resilience and redemption. Set against the larger canvas of a nation in flux, it explores themes of guilt, resilience, and the search for identity in a world forever changed by war.
