Beschreibung

A Prince of Swindlers is the story of one intelligent, fearless, and clever scoundrel who keeps an entire city in terror. He is an ingenious thief and a master of disguise who has conned all of London. The thief executes a series of plans that involve him stealing a diamond necklace, arranging the theft of a horse, stealing some wedding gifts, misleading the profits of a charity campaign, and swimming off with a visiting royal's most refined gold plate. He uses several schemes to fool the English upper class and comes away with millions. It's a story of how an unexpected encounter between a conman and a British diplomat led to a series of adventures. It's interesting and fun to read how he plans out his complex plans and always manages to execute them. The gentleman thief is a fascinating character who often recaps his plans to the reader in dialogue. This gave him a humorous villain quality that adds to the story's charm. Much of the humor depicts his personality wonderfully. It's a mind-blowing story that will meet any reader's need for thrills.

Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.
THE SCHOOLMASTER AND THE EMPIRE: "If Youth but Knew" is the title of a book published some years ago, but still with a quite living interest, by "Kappa"; it is the bitter complaint of a distressed senior against our educational system.

'There is a germ of revolt in every injustice.'

Part of Zola's ambitious twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart, Germinal is one of the most notable novels written in the French tradition and is often considered Zola's masterpiece.

First serialised in the periodical Gil Blas in 1884, Germinal is a profoundly gripping novel that explores the harsh realities of industrial life in nineteenth century France. When Étienne Lantier arrives in the town of Montsou in search for work, he is confronted by the brutal conditions endured by the coal miners: gruelling shifts, meagre wages and backbreaking labour. As Étienne immerses himself in the community, he takes it upon himself to become a voice for the labourers and a leader in their fight for justice. As tensions rise and a minor's strike begins to brew, Zola candidly depicts a devastating spiral into violence and despair. Through vivid characters and uncompromising realism, Zola movingly captures the human cost of capitalism with a blossoming hope for revolution. This audiobook edition is beautifully narrated by David Rintoul.
Émile Zola (1840 – 1902) was a French novelist, playwright and journalist. He was also a keen adopter of naturalism, famed for his realistic depictions of characters and their environments. Nominated for the first and second Nobel Prizes in Literature in 1901 and 1902, Zola's work is still widely read and respected today.

Dive into Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, a masterpiece that seamlessly weaves Gothic horror with the seeds of science fiction. Journey with Victor Frankenstein, a scientist consumed by ambition, who creates a being that defies nature, only to spiral into a nightmare of his own making. This novel is not just a tale of terror but an introspective look at the human condition, exploring themes of guilt, isolation, and the ethical quandaries of scientific advancement.
Shelley's novel, enriched by her own life's turmoil and the intellectual ferment of her times, challenges us to ponder the boundaries between creator and creation, responsibility, and regret. Its complex narrative and profound questions resonate as much today as they did in the 19th century, making it a timeless examination of man’s aspirations and the darkness they can unleash.
Frankenstein is a journey into the depths of human ambition and the consequences it can birth. This gripping narrative, alongside its enduring questions, proves that true horror lies in the mirror reflection of our collective choices. Don't miss this chance to own a piece of literary history that remains chillingly relevant in today's technological age.
