Synopsis

EDITORIAL PREFACE (1913)
The author of this work, Gustav Aschaffenburg, stands in the front rank of leaders of thought in modern criminal science in Germany. His work bears witness to the valuable aid which medical and psychiatric studies must always render to criminal law. In its thoroughly realistic application of social statistics to the theories of criminal law, it occupies a place of almost unique importance in the literature of criminal science. Finally, it presents an original treatment of the entire subject — the Repression of Crime — which may well serve some day as a model for a work based on American statistics, — if reliable ones shall ever become available.

In the heart of urban landscapes, the idea of a "city within one building" has evolved from a futuristic concept to a tangible reality. These monumental structures encapsulate the essence of urban life, redefining the way we live, work, and interact within confined yet dynamic environments. At their core, they embody the idea of vertical urbanism—a vision that seeks to concentrate the diversity and vibrancy of a city into a single architectural entity.
The origins of this vision can be traced to the pressures of urbanization and the relentless march of technological innovation. As cities expanded horizontally, they encountered spatial limitations, environmental challenges, and infrastructural strain. The solution lay not outward, but upward. Vertical urbanism emerged as a response to these challenges, combining architectural ingenuity with a commitment to sustainability. The result is a new typology of buildings that integrate residential, commercial, recreational, and even cultural spaces into a cohesive, self-contained ecosystem.
One of the most compelling aspects of these megastructures is their ability to transform our perception of space and connectivity. Traditional cities rely on sprawling layouts that separate different functions—housing, offices, schools, and leisure activities are often miles apart. By contrast, a city within a building integrates these elements into a seamless whole. Residents can live, work, and play without stepping outside, reducing reliance on transportation and fostering a sense of community within the structure’s walls.

As the global population continues to urbanize at an unprecedented rate, the health challenges faced by city dwellers are becoming increasingly important. Over half of the world’s population now resides in urban areas, and this figure is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades. While cities offer a multitude of opportunities for economic, social, and cultural growth, they also pose unique risks to the health and well-being of their inhabitants. The concentration of people, industries, and infrastructure in urban spaces brings forth a complex array of health issues, from air and water pollution to mental health challenges and inadequate healthcare access. Understanding and addressing these issues is crucial for creating cities that foster not only economic prosperity but also the physical and mental well-being of their populations.
Urban health problems are often exacerbated by rapid and unplanned growth. In many cities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the urbanization process is marked by overcrowded living conditions, poor sanitation, and a lack of adequate healthcare facilities. Urban air pollution, largely driven by traffic and industrial emissions, is a significant contributor to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and premature deaths. Meanwhile, the noise and stress associated with city living have been linked to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. These environmental factors, combined with limited access to green spaces and recreational areas, create a challenging backdrop for promoting public health in cities.
In addition to environmental hazards, urban health is also shaped by social determinants. Disparities in healthcare access, education, income, and living conditions often result in health inequities, particularly among marginalized populations. The urban poor, for instance, are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases and lack proper healthcare resources.
