Sinossi

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Grant Allen, the life of one of the most versatile writers of English literature

Originally published in 1891, “What’s Bred in the Bone” is a novel by Canadian author Grant Allen and is considered by many the craziest nineteenth-century novel.

The convoluted and colourful plot of "What's Bred in the Bone" is a perfect mix of quirky elements, such as identical twin heroes whose teeth ache simultaneously, a heroine struggling to overcome an irrepressible desire to dance with snakes (or feather boas), murder, illegitimacy and a rather dubious dubious South African diamond hunting spell...

"What's Bred in the Bone" is an extraordinary novel, certainly a testament to Grant Allen's versatility and mastery of the popular market. Allen wrote this novel as a competition entry and it’s not difficult to see why he beat 20,000 other entries to pocket the sizeable £1,000 prize money. “What’s Bred in the Bone” is ridiculous but also ridiculously fun, and well-written enough to be incredibly readable.

When women across the nation take an unprecedented stand—refusing traditional roles and withdrawing entirely from society—the world is thrown into chaos. The Strike of a Sex explores a transformative social upheaval through the eyes of Rodney Carford, a man bewildered by the collapse of everyday life in a city suddenly absent of women. With households in disarray, men struggling to adapt, and political reforms rapidly unfolding, the women demand one uncompromising principle: the irrevocable right to their own bodies and the freedom to choose motherhood on their own terms.
George Noyes Miller’s provocative late 19th-century novel blends satire, social commentary, and earnest advocacy, creating a powerful and surprisingly modern exploration of gender equality and personal autonomy. Narrated by Joe Reeder, this audiobook delivers a bold and thought-provoking journey into a world reshaped by women’s collective will.

Fans of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women will remember that her heroine Jo wrote racy novels before turning her hand to more "serious" literature. Alcott, writing under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard, often did the same, and Behind a Mask (1866) is one of her sensation novels. It focuses on Jean Muir, who enters the home of the wealthy Coventry family as governess to their sixteen-year-old daughter. But is the beguiling Miss Muir all that she seems to be? (Introduction by Elizabeth Klett)
