Synopsis

The object and plan of this book is somewhat different from that of any other guides at present before the public. The author's purpose is not to direct the stranger through the streets and squares of an unknown town toward the buildings or sights which he may desire to visit; still less is it his design to give him practical information about hotels, cab fares, omnibuses, tramways, and other everyday material conveniences. For such details, the traveller must still have recourse to other trusty books. The author desires to supply the tourist who wishes to use his travel as a means of culture with such historical and antiquarian information as will enable him to understand, and therefore to enjoy, the architecture, sculpture, painting, and minor arts of the towns he visits. His object is to give the reader in a very compendious form the result of all those inquiries which have naturally suggested themselves to my own mind during thirty-five years of foreign travel, the solution of which has cost myself a good deal of research, thought, and labour, beyond the facts which I could find in the ordinary handbooks.

A unique visual account: “The hour-by-hour maps of the maneuvering and fighting provide the clearest cartographic picture of the battle in existence.” —James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom   In this extraordinary book, seventy crystal-clear color maps and insightful text tell the hour-by-hour story of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg. Each map shows the same three-and-a-half-by-four-and-a-half-mile view of the battlefield, allowing the reader to visualize the battle as it developed over the entire area, including key engagements, troop movements and positions, and locations of commanders. It sheds new light on important events such as the first clash west of town on July 1, the fighting for Cemetery Hill, the defense of Little Round Top, Pickett’s Charge, and more.   “The accompanying text brings the battle alive and nicely compliments the maps.” —D. Scott Hartwig, author of To Antietam Creek   “The movements are depicted clearly, and in full color, so that even a complete newcomer to the battle can follow the action easily.”—Craig L. Symonds, author of The American Heritage History of the Battle of Gettysburg

A highly entertaining anecdotal collection of humorous life observations during a trip around the world. Travelling by bus to Kathmandu, the author experiences hair-raising misadventures: a chase through Jerusalem, a gun battle in Jordan, a pummelling by a gargantuan masseur in Istanbul, a python in India, and the terrifying James Bond encounter in Australia. His portrait of an Afghani shopkeeper has a bizarre twist.
Time-travelling detours punctuate interesting stories about the Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House, Tahiti, Easter Island statues and Christ in Rio. More than a travelogue, personal insights and character portrayals are underscored by whimsical humour.

A riveting journey down Theodore Roosevelt's "river of doubt" with a diverse crew of adventurers, scientists, and Indigenous leaders who shine light on the past, present, and future of a natural wonder.Sam Moses took part in the adventure of a lifetime when he, along with seventeen men and two women, embarked on the Rio Roosevelt Expedition. They would follow the former president's wake down five-hundred miles of extreme whitewater into the dark heart of the Amazon. The party was guided by two chiefs from the Cinta Larga tribe—the same tribe that stalked Roosevelt's expedition in 1914—who, between rapids, tell the story of the tribe's own Trail of Tears. After the wildest whitewater is past, Moses travels with the chiefs to their village to witness the massive illegal mahogany logging from their forest, the Roosevelt Indigenous Territory. River Without a Cause puts us in the raft during those heart pounding rapid descents, as we experience the drama, dynamics, and disputes between the Bull Moose and his coleader, Brazil's most famous explorer, the rigid Colonel Candido Rondon. As the Amazon stands on the precipice of hope with the election of a new Brazilian president, River Without a Cause is a moving and galvanizing tale of adventure that is a fitting tribute to this world wonder.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The world as we know it feels mapped, photographed, and documented—a planet where satellites sweep the skies and every mountain, desert, and shoreline is marked with coordinates. Yet, beneath this illusion of total knowledge, lie hidden corners humanity was never meant to see. Secret Earth: Places You Weren’t Meant to Find is a compelling journey into those forbidden zones—territories of secrecy, danger, and mystery that resist the light of exposure.
Across twenty richly told chapters, the book reveals a global atlas of the hidden and the unreachable. Some places are locked away by governments, their gates sealed with silence. Consider Area 51, that infamous desert base where secrecy turned into myth, or Pine Gap, Australia’s “eye in the sky,” where satellites and signals weave webs of global surveillance. Others are shielded by cultural guardianship—lands like North Sentinel Island, where an indigenous people reject all contact, or the Vatican Archives, whose shelves hide manuscripts and histories beyond public reach. Still others are guarded by nature itself, such as Snake Island in Brazil, where thousands of lethal vipers forbid human settlement, or the fragile chambers of the Lascaux Caves, sealed because a single breath could erase art that has survived for 17,000 years.
The book moves fluidly from ancient ruins to modern fortresses, from legendary sites to contemporary phenomena. We descend into the underground labyrinth of Derinkuyu in Turkey, where entire towns once lived in secret, and stand before India’s haunted Bhangarh Fort, abandoned to legend and cursed memory. We explore Mezhgorye in Russia, a mysterious closed city guarding subterranean secrets, and enter the strange exclusivity of Bohemian Grove, California, where the powerful retreat into ritual behind towering redwoods.
