When American archaeologists discovered a collection of cuneiform tablets in Iraq in the late 19th century, they were confronted with a language and a people who were at the time only scarcely known to even the most knowledgeable scholars of ancient Mesopotamia. The exploits and achievements of other Mesopotamian peoples, such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, were already known to a large segment of the population through the Old Testament and the nascent field of Near Eastern studies had unraveled the enigma of the Akkadian language that was widely used throughout the region in ancient times, but the discovery of the Sumerian tablets brought to light the existence of the Sumerian culture, which was the oldest of all the Mesopotamian cultures.
Although the Sumerians continue to get second or even third billing compared to the Babylonians and Assyrians, perhaps because they never built an empire as great as the Assyrians or established a city as enduring and great as Babylon, they were the people who provided the template of civilization that all later Mesopotamians built upon. The Sumerians are credited with being the first people to invent writing, libraries, cities, and schools in Mesopotamia, and many would argue that they were the first people to create and do those things anywhere in world.
For a people so great it is unfortunate that their accomplishments and contributions, not only to Mesopotamian civilization but to civilization in general, largely go unnoticed by the majority of the public. Perhaps the Sumerians were victims of their own success; they gradually entered the historical record, established a fine civilization, and then slowly submerged into the cultural patchwork of their surroundings. They also never suffered a great and sudden collapse like other peoples of the ancient Near East, such as the Hittites, Assyrians and Neo-Babylonians did.

A thrilling account of the events surrounding the execution of three Fenians known as the Manchester Martyrs. Their execution during a turbulent period of Irish history in 1867 united the Irish people in a patriotic fervour and outrage not matched until 1916. The events surrounding the dramatic rescue of Fenian leaders (resulting in the Martyrs' execution) attracted worldwide attention and sparked anti-British protests across the globe. Their trial is one of the most infamous British court cases of the nineteenth century and their hanging was Britain's last public multiple execution. In 2006 Bertie Ahern announced that the Irish government would grant the Martyrs a full state funeral and re-inter them in a grave at Glasnevin Cemetery. The plan foundered because their remains could not be located at that time. This book reveals the location of the remains and explains why they will never be returned to Ireland.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Hindenburg: Thirty-Second Inferno is a clear, human-centered chronicle of the most famous airship in history and the half-minute of fire that ended an era. Spanning twenty immersive chapters, it traces the zeppelin dream from its hopeful beginnings through the Hindenburg’s majestic construction, serene ocean crossings, and refined life aboard—promenades of glass, piano in the lounge, disciplined crews, and a floating world of quiet elegance. With steady, simple prose, it opens the doors of the hangars at Friedrichshafen, walks the reader along duralumin ribs and gas cells, and reveals the teamwork, rituals, and pride that held a giant ship safely in the sky.
The narrative narrows to May 6, 1937: the gray New Jersey evening, the slow turn over Lakehurst, the dropped mooring lines, and then the sudden bloom of flame that raced the length of the hull. The book stays close to witnesses and survivors—rescuers running into heat and smoke, passengers finding seconds of courage, and the trembling voice of the famous broadcast that carried grief into homes around the world. It follows the night’s rescue efforts, the solemn roll of names, and the first careful questions asked among wreckage still warm with rain and ash.
Beyond the shock, the book examines investigations and debates with calm clarity: hydrogen’s lift against its peril, helium’s safety against its scarcity, static and weather, leak and spark, and the humble truth that complex failures are chains, not single breaks. It shows how the disaster reshaped trust and practice—longer checklists, better materials, clearer cockpit authority—and how airplanes quietly inherited the future as airships slipped into memory.
