The Hanseatic League, often simply referred to as the Hansa, emerged during the late Middle Ages as a powerful and influential commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in northern Europe. Its origins can be traced back to the 12th century, a time when trade across Europe was expanding, and the need for security, consistency, and cooperation among merchants became more apparent. In this period of growing urbanization and shifting political structures, the groundwork was laid for what would become one of the most successful trade networks of the medieval world.
Before the League formally took shape, various Germanic merchants had already been engaged in trade across the North and Baltic Seas. These early trade routes connected regions like modern-day Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and the Baltic states. Merchant groups began forming guilds—organized associations that provided mutual protection, standardized trade practices, and a collective voice in foreign cities. These early guilds were critical in shaping the cooperative ethos that would later define the Hanseatic League.
The political and economic environment of medieval Europe also contributed to the League's formation. The decline of centralized imperial authority, particularly in the Holy Roman Empire, left towns and cities to manage their own economic affairs. This autonomy encouraged local leaders and merchants to seek regional alliances to protect trade interests and ensure the safe passage of goods and people. At the same time, the Crusades had opened new routes and markets, boosting the importance of northern European trade centers.

'DEMOCRACY HAS A LONG, EVENTFUL PAST. DOES IT HAVE A FUTURE?The roots of democracy stretch back beyond Athens to Syria- Mesopotamia and the Indian subcontinent, where citizens' assemblies held privilege and power to account over 3,000 years before the French Revolution. In this timely and illuminating new global history, John Keane ('one of the world's leading political thinkers' ,The Times) gets to the heart of a complex, ever-evolving ideal.Today, American-style democracy may appear to be in decline, but Keane shows that this isn't the whole story. In many places, such as Taiwan and Senegal, India and South Africa, distinctly local varieties are coming into being. Yet it's impossible to ignore the proliferation of populist strongmen on every continent: the Putins and the Bolsonaros, the Trumps and Lukashenkos. Is democracy past its sell-by date, as they would have us believe? Or is it time to embrace the true, radical potential of an ancient idea?

An action-oriented approach for businesses to solve the world’s most urgent social problems — and benefit from doing so.

More than a year into a global pandemic, profit and shareholder value are no longer the primary metric of business success. Customers, shareholders, and communities are demanding that companies do good, do more, and do better. In Change for Good, Paul Klein shows how companies must move beyond what he calls “corporate social responsibility light” and demonstrate how they can help solve social problems that have been defined as UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Change for Good is a new system for making social change through business that reflects Paul’s experience over the last 35 years. One of the core principles of Change for Good is including people with lived experience of social problems in identifying promising solutions and collaborating to bring these solutions to life. This methodology can create impactful and sustainable social change in society in ways that aren’t possible when executives make decisions in their boardrooms that are intended to impact the lives of vulnerable people.

Through personal experiences, case studies, and practical tools, Change for Good will inspire readers and their organizations to make the shift from a passive social responsibility to taking action to help solve the world’s most pressing social problems.

People, art and life. A record of a particular space in time. Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Sukhothai, Honolulu, Mexico City, northernmost Scotland, Andorra. Intimates and strangers. A mother and son seen for some seconds on a bridge in Shanghai. The emotions flowing between performer and conductor throughout a concert. The interpretation one creative artist gives to that of another's work. Gillian Bickley values the records we all make: — the heritage we may or may not preserve, what we choose to reveal of our lives, the constant interpretative understanding of the personal as well as the historical past, and the sacredness of memory. Here we find observation and reflection – on current affairs as well as people and places – and also the frisson produced by five "skulls" in a window, a funeral owl caught in hire-car headlights, and the realization that classical stories are re-enacted in our own lives.
" … a collection refined by the sensitivity and spirit of a poet who observes with the wonder and clarity of someone who is at once an insider and outsider. In her works, we see that Bickley's poetry has the ability to provide both spontaneous, on-the-spot immediacy and lingering, contemplative power…. Every city may have its gaps, ambiguities and unknowabilities, and the poet's intimate and candid reflections in this collection have successfully uncovered some of them." – Hilary Chan Tsz-Shan, Reviews, Asian Cha, February 2010 (Issue 10).
"You are lucky to have this poetry in your hand." — Karmel Schreyer.
"The poems in CHINA SUITE are unpretentious, direct, and even raw, like gemstones freshly dug out of a quarry. The psychological boundaries drawn to separate cultures from cultures, clans from clans, and individual from individual are utterly destroyed. An unnoticed observer, she trespasses ethnic taboos and social no-nos, and writes down whatever she sees without getting caught—in a graceful way." — Elbert S. P. Lee
