We live in a world of seemingly limitless consumer choice. Yet, as every shopper knows without thinking about it, many everyday goods—from beds to batteries to printer paper—are available in a finite number of "standard sizes." What makes these sizes "standard" is an agreement among competing firms to make or sell products with the same limited dimensions. But how did firms—often hotly competing firms—reach such collective agreements?

In exploring this question, Colleen Dunlavy puts the history of mass production and distribution in an entirely new light. She reveals that, despite the widely publicized model offered by Henry Ford, mass production techniques did not naturally diffuse throughout the US economy. On the contrary, formidable market forces blocked their diffusion. It was only under the cover of collectively agreed-upon, industry-wide standard sizes—orchestrated by the federal government—that competing firms were able to break free of market forces and transition to mass production and distribution. Without government promotion of standard sizes, the twentieth-century American variety of capitalism would have looked markedly less "Fordist."

Small, Medium, Large will make all of us think differently about the everyday consumer choices we take for granted.

For some, Péguy is “an anarchist who put holy water in his oil”; for others, a dangerous rebel whose “head is full of revolution”. A socialist and a Catholic, a pious poet and a raging polemicist, Péguy turns out to be a man with a sometimes chaotic, always leaping journey.
Few authors have had such a controversial posterity as he. One hundred years after his death, it is time to do justice to this unclassifiable thinker, little known in his time, and who has so much to say in ours.
Yves Rouvière's drawings are there to give substance to the words, to “embody the spiritual”, according to one of Péguy's cherished intuitions.

For a period of 85 years, the M Street/Dunbar High School was an academically elite, all-black public high school in Washington, D.C. As far back as 1899, its students came in first in citywide tests given in both black and white schools. Over this 85-year span, approximately 80 percent of M Street/Dunbar’s graduates went on to college, even though most Americans, white or black, did not attend college at all. Faculty and students were mutually respectful to one another, and disruptions in the classroom were not tolerated. Yet, in this era of best practices, this public high school, whose founders experienced slavery and segregation firsthand, has received virtually no attention in the literature or in policy considerations for inner-city education. The purpose of this study is to explore the history of a high school that was successful in teaching black children from families at all income levels to excel and to determine if the learning model employed in the past could be successful in a modern inner-city public education environment.

GILLIAN BICKLEY was born and educated in the UK and has lived mainly in Hong Kong since 1970. The poems in Sightings are on Hong Kong, European and personal subjects, accessible to many readers, both young and old. They consider what it is like to be a human being in this modern world, drawing inspiration mainly from the people whom the writer has encountered, especially in Hong Kong.
An academic turned full-time writer, editor and publisher, Gillian invites readers and listeners to share her enjoyment of city and country, simple and complex ideas and events, and her empathy with the largely innocent people she has come across. In her trademark transparent style, she draws on events, happenings, creatures, artefacts and objects she has seen, and on places and people she has experienced in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa, as well as on stimulating and memorable books she has read.
"She has made use of everyday life situations and turned them into life lessons. Sightings inspires us to slow down and taste the sense of the city."— Ma Kwai Hung, Hong Kong.
"The poems in Sightings are witty, poignant, full of memorable images and insights and a total delight." — Professor Ken Pickering
"Sightings conveys playfulness and ironic humour. The writer displays, 'a strong ethical sense and a constant and engaging lyricism'." —Marion Bethel, Bahamian poet
Bickley has, "a talent for turning the stuff of ordinary life into poetry. She continually surprises and delights by making fresh connections between seemingly disparate situations". — Mrs Margaret Clarke, Oxfordshire.
"Gillian Bickley walks around the world with her eyes open, relishing the phenomena she passes".— Harry Guest, Honorary University Fellow, University of Exeter, UK (from his 'Preface' to Sightings).
