You cannot undo this, one of the surgeons told me, you have to be sure. I was sure. My choices were frightening, grim and daunting. I possess the rare Breast Cancer genetic mutation BRCA2 and I saw it as a death sentence. My choices were drastic, my actions were immediate.   Complete Hysterectomy followed by Prophylactic Double Mastectomy with Reconstruction. I will never be the same. In so many ways. It was, and is, such a journey.
I clearly remember when Angelina Jolie first publicized her preventive mastectomy; it was a shock, almost unthinkable, to remove healthy organs from a healthy body. My perspective on that has certainly changed; I followed in her footsteps! She is brave, a pioneer, but did not tell of her experience.
The New Girls fills that gap, and describes with candor, humor and raw emotion, what it was like to undergo such extensive surgery. It was not easy. The rewards, however, are tremendous! I took my Breast Cancer risk from almost certain to nearly zero.  At first, I wanted my transformation to be a secret, so that people would not know what I have done. When I realized how little awareness there is, the desire to share my experience, to help people, simply grew and grew.  I started this book while in recovery; it’s entitled The New Girls because that is what I call my new breasts, and they are the protagonists;)!
I sincerely hope that my story lets people facing the same or similar decisions know they are not alone. I felt alone, uninformed, without clear information about what to expect, what it would feel like. Please listen to, share and embrace The New Girls.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is no longer fit for purpose.

Reflecting on his career in the RCMP from 1973 to 2003, Garry Clement recounts his childhood in rural Ontario; his RCMP training in Regina; his drug-bust days based in British Columbia, Montreal, and Toronto; his work battling the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration of Canada; his role in the Parliament Hill bus hijacking; his involvement in the post–9/11 Maher Arar inquiry; his impact on the RCMP’s Proceeds of Crime program and on anti–money laundering in Canada and abroad; and his reasons for leaving the RCMP. Under Cover provides a gripping and vulnerable inside look into the corruption of politics and policing in Canada.

In light of the mounting complexities of transnational organized crime, terrorism, cybercrime, and financial crime, Clement calls for a complete revamping of the culture of federal policing. We need a fundamental structural reformation of the RCMP. Garry Clement offers direct recommendations for how to approach such a task.

    The Anatomy of Deception -...

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, trust in the healthcare system seems to be at an all-time low. Conspiracy theories are now mainstream, and distrust of government health agencies is common among private citizens. Yet many of those same individuals still profess trust in their doctors. What, then, is driving the general mistrust in medicine, and how can the public's faith be restored?

The Anatomy of Deception investigates the cause behind this seeming uptick in distrust by tracing the unexpected connection between medical mistrust and the move toward far right ideology in the United States. Drawing on personal qualitative research and interviews, health writer and expert Sara Gorman challenges traditional concepts of medical mistrust and argues that the loss of institutional trust in American health care signals a larger breakdown in democracy as a whole. In six short chapters, Gorman advances the idea of medical mistrust not as a byproduct of personal or historical abuses but as a direct result of bias, miscommunication, and lack of access that has slowly eroded trust in the public health system over time. She argues that we can build back trust in medicine through investments in health equity as a first step towards healing the schisms present in modern American society.

A guide to your spiritual journey of transformation using the Enneagram.   “The Enneagram of the Soul invites us on a journey of profound self-discovery.” —from the foreword by Russ Hudson, bestselling coauthor of The Wisdom of the Enneagram  The Enneagram of the Soul is inspired by over two decades of inner and outer work with the Enneagram by leading expert Nhien Vuong. Nhien provides a path to wholeness for the self, enabling the reader to be steered gently yet firmly away from the trap of solely identifying with their personality type, so they can live more fully from their divine nature.   This book is divided into two parts. Part 1 shares nine Enneagram-informed principles that guide one’s journey of transformation using the Enneagram, nine contemplative practices to propel and support the transformational process, and nine prayers to lend heart to the journey. Part 2 offers forty activations, which consist of very brief questions, reminders, or practices on forty different themes customized for each of the nine Enneagram personality types. When we begin to access the wholeness of all nine Enneagram energies working in concert, we experience a greater sense of inner peace, purpose, and fulfillment.   “An important and uniquely useful contribution to the Enneagram literature in that she provides a pathway for the types, built around practices and principles.” —Beatrice Chestnut, author of The Enneagram Guide to Waking Up
