Appointments to the United States Supreme Court are now central events in American political life. However, this has not always been the case. As late as the middle of the twentieth century, presidents invested little time and effort in finding and vetting nominees. Media coverage was desultory, public opinion was largely non-existent, and the justices often voted independently and erratically.

In Making the Supreme Court, Charles M. Cameron and Jonathan P. Kastellec show how the growth of federal judicial power from the 1930s onward inspired a multitude of groups struggling to shape judicial policy. Over time, some groups moved beyond lobbying the Court to changing who sits on it. Other groups formed expressly to influence appointments. These activists and organized groups penetrated the national party system so that after about 1980, presidential candidates increasingly pledged to select and confirm nominees who conformed to specific policy and ideological litmus tests. Once in office, these presidents reshaped the executive selection system to deliver on their promises. As Cameron and Kastellec argue, the result is a new politics aimed squarely at selecting and placing judicial ideologues on the Court. They make the case that this new model gradually transformed how the Court itself operates, turning it into an ideologically driven and polarized branch.

Americans knew polio as the "summer plague." In countries further North, however, the virus arrived later in the year. It was described by one writer as "the autumn ghost."

Intensive care units and mechanical ventilation are the crucial foundation of modern medical care: without them, the appalling death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic would be even higher. In The Autumn Ghost, Dr. Hannah Wunsch traces the origins of these two innovations back to a polio epidemic in the autumn of 1952. Drawing together testimony from doctors, nurses, medical students, and patients, Wunsch relates a gripping tale of an epidemic that changed the world.

Wunsch tells the true story of how insiders and iconoclasts came together in one overwhelmed hospital in Copenhagen to save the lives of many polio patients dying of respiratory failure. Their radical advances in care marked a turning point in the treatment of patients around the world—from the rise of life support and the creation of intensive care units to the evolution of rehabilitation medicine.

The Autumn Ghost will leave listeners in awe of the courage of those who battled the polio epidemic, and grateful for the modern medical care they pioneered.

    ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
"To Sleep in a Sea of Stars" by Christopher Paolini follows Kira Navárez, a xenobiologist, as she makes a groundbreaking discovery of an alien artifact that leads to an unexpected and dangerous path. While exploring a seemingly unremarkable planet, Kira comes into contact with an alien organism that bonds to her body. This contact thrusts her into a galactic conflict with an alien race, known as the Jellies, that threatens the existence of humanity.

Kira must navigate the complexities of this new reality while dealing with the consequences of her actions and learning about the xeno organism, which she calls the Soft Blade. The story explores themes of first contact, xenobiology, and the challenges of interspecies communication, alongside the ethics of scientific discovery. Kira grapples with her role in the unfolding events and the moral implications of her unique connection with the alien organism.

    BATMAN
THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy industrialist who becomes a crime-fighting vigilante after witnessing his parents' murder. He is known as the Dark Knight and World's Greatest Detective, with no superpowers, but peak human condition. He is a master of martial arts, stealth, and strategy, and utilizes high-tech gadgets and vehicles. He operates from the Batcave below Wayne Manor, and his actions are motivated by a strict moral code and a desire for justice. Batman has a rogues gallery of villains and allies such as Robin, Alfred Pennyworth and Commissioner Gordon.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Batman's first appearance was in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, but the character was initially a ruthless vigilante who would kill or maim criminals. Over time, he evolved into a hero with a strict moral code against killing.

Although Bob Kane is often credited as the sole creator of Batman, Bill Finger significantly contributed to the character's design and backstory, including the cowl, cape, and a darker costume, but was not officially credited until 2015. Finger also helped develop the character from a generic superhero to a bat-like persona.

Bruce Wayne's playboy persona is a facade to avert suspicion, while his true identity is the crime-fighting Batman. This contrasts with Superman, whose Clark Kent identity is considered his true self, while Superman is the facade.
