  The 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) was the first and only all-black Ranger unit in the history of the United States Army. The 2nd and 4th Rangers were among the units initially assigned to the Eighth Army and were considered to be "combat ready." The 2nd Ranger Company battled North Korean and Communist Chinese Forces. The 2nd Ranger Company conducted the first airborne assault in Ranger history near the town of Munsan-ni and executed the heroic attack and defense of Hill 581.   The Great Famine of 1789-1792 stands as one of the most significant preconditions to the French Revolution. It was a period marked by widespread food scarcity, severe hunger, and social unrest. Although the famine itself was a direct consequence of several intertwined factors, it was also the tipping point that exposed the deep flaws within the French system of governance and society. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the famine, exploring its causes, the impact on the population, and the broader societal repercussions that contributed to the revolutionary atmosphere of the late 18th century. 
  At the heart of the famine was a series of poor harvests in France, exacerbated by harsh weather conditions. The years 1788 and 1789 saw a succession of bad weather, including a particularly harsh winter, followed by storms and a devastating hailstorm that destroyed much of the grain crops. These climatic anomalies caused a dramatic reduction in the food supply, especially in the vital grain harvests. With bread being the staple food for the majority of the population, the shortages led to skyrocketing prices. As bread became unaffordable for many, hunger spread rapidly, and it wasn’t just the peasantry but even urban dwellers who felt the pinch. 
  This agricultural crisis was further compounded by the weak response of the French monarchy and its institutions. King Louis XVI and his ministers were largely ineffective in addressing the immediate needs of the people. The government, which was already burdened by war debts and an inefficient taxation system, failed to ensure that food distribution was prioritized. The monarchy’s inability to manage the crisis led to widespread dissatisfaction and eroded any remaining faith the people had in their rulers.

  The Romantic myth of Bohemia originated in the early nineteenth century as a way of describing the new conditions faced by artists and writers when the previous system of aristocratic patronage collapsed in the wake of the Age of Revolution. Without the patron system, the artist was free to move around, to seek an audience wherever fortune beckoned. This marketing model likening the artist's vagabond career to the "gypsy" life helps to explain part of the bohemian myth, but not all of it. Most bohemians have scant interest in commercial gain and are not so itinerant after all, confining their movements to down-market urban neighborhoods where the rent is cheap and the morals are loose. 
   
   
   
  This Very Short Introduction traces the myth of Bohemia through its various fictional manifestations, from Henry Murger's novel Scenes of Bohemian Life and Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème to Aki Kaurismäki's film La vie de Bohème and Jonathan Larson's musical Rent. It goes on to examine the history of different bohemian communities, including those in the Latin Quarter of Paris and the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York. David Weir also considers the politics of Bohemia and traces the careers of the artists Gustave Courbet and Pablo Picasso and the great chanteuses Yvette Guilbert, Fréhel, and Edith Piaf in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris.

  Perhaps the most famous trade company in all of history, the East India Company served as one of the key players in the formation of the British Empire. From its origins as a trading company struggling to keep up with its superior Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish competitors to its tenure as the ruling authority of the Indian subcontinent to its eventual hubristic downfall, the East India Company serves as a lens through which to explore the much larger economic and social forces that shaped the formation of a global British Empire. As a private company that became a non-state global power in its own right, the East India Company also serves as a cautionary tale all too relevant to the modern world’s current political and economic situation. 
  After the Englishman Henry Hudson, under the aegis of the Dutch East India Company, sailed by Manhattan in 1609, he returned home with good news and bad news. Like the other explorers before him, he hadn’t been able to find a water route to the Orient. He had, however, returned with maps (confiscated by the English) and beaver pelts. With that, it became clear that the region around the bay that would take Hudson’s name was a very promising new territory for trade and settlement, which would become a serious bone of contention between the Dutch and the English for the rest of the century. In 1614, another Dutch East India merchant, Adriaen Block, entered through the narrows of the East River between Queens and Randall’s Island, a difficult and dangerous passage that later sank numerous ships and that Block named Hell’s Gate (Hellegat). The European world would know the name “Manhates” when Block returned to the Netherlands with new and improved maps.
