  During the Civil War his movements from battlefield to battlefield were followed in the North and in the South nearly as closely as those of generals, though he was not in the military. After the war, his swift response to Ku Klux Klan violence sparked passage of a landmark civil rights law, though he was not a politician. When he died in 1888 newspapers reported his death from coast to coast, yet he's unknown today. He was the man who delivered the most valuable ingredient in United States soldiers' fighting spirit during those terrible war years—letters between the front lines and the home front.   At the beginning of the Civil War, at the request of his childhood friend Ulysses S. Grant, Markland created the most efficient military mail system ever devised, and Grant gave him the honorary title of colonel. Nearly every biography of Lincoln, Sherman, and Grant includes at least one footnote about Markland, but his important, sometimes daily interaction with them during and after the war has escaped modern notice, until now. Absalom Markland is a forgotten American hero. Delivered Under Fire tells his amazing story.

  History of Romania - An Overview...

  The earliest evidence of human habitation in what is now Romania dates back to prehistoric times, but one of the first recorded mentions comes from the writings of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. In his work Histories, Book IV, written around 440 BC, Herodotus described the Getae, a Thracian tribe residing in the region that would later become Romania. According to Herodotus, the Getae were defeated by Persian Emperor Darius the Great during his military campaign against the Scythians. This reference marks an important historical mention of the people inhabiting the area. 
  The Dacians, a branch of the Thracian people, are believed to have been closely related to the Getae mentioned by the Greeks. The Dacians inhabited a region known as Dacia, which included present-day Romania, Moldova, parts of northern Bulgaria, and surrounding areas. Their culture, society, and military strength developed significantly, making them a prominent force in southeastern Europe. The Dacians are often regarded as the ancestors of modern Romanians, and their legacy is a crucial element of Romanian national identity.

  The Irish Potato Famine - The...

  From 1845 to 1852, the Great Hunger, also referred to as the Potato Famine, was a period of a lot of starvation and illness in Ireland. The period was known in Irish at the time as a Drochshaol, loosely translated as "the hard days," with the most badly affected districts in the west and south of Ireland, where the Irish language was popular (or actually "the bad life"). 
  The year 1847, at times called "Black '47," was the absolute worst year of the period. Around 1 million people died and over a million left the nation throughout the Great Famine, triggering the nation's population to come by 20% to 25%, with certain cities coming by as much as 67 percent between 1841 and 1851. And between the years 1845 and 1855, about 2.1 million people were leaving Ireland, primarily aboard package ships but also on steamboats and barks. This actually made it one of the biggest mass migrations from a single isle in all of history.
