Tectonophysics is the branch of geophysics that studies the physical processes governing the movement and deformation of Earth's lithosphere. It serves as the foundation for understanding the forces that drive plate tectonics, mountain building, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. This field integrates principles from geology, physics, and engineering to explain how stresses, strains, and material properties influence the behavior of the Earth's crust and mantle.
The development of tectonophysics as a scientific discipline emerged from the broader study of geodynamics and plate tectonics. In the early 20th century, Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift, suggesting that continents were once joined in a supercontinent called Pangaea before slowly drifting apart. However, his ideas lacked a convincing mechanism. It was not until the mid-20th century that discoveries such as seafloor spreading and mantle convection provided the necessary framework for the modern theory of plate tectonics. These findings revolutionized the understanding of Earth's dynamic nature, establishing tectonophysics as a crucial field in geoscience.
At its core, tectonophysics investigates the forces that drive plate motions. Earth's interior consists of the solid inner core, the molten outer core, the mantle, and the brittle lithosphere. Heat from the core generates convective currents in the mantle, which exert stress on the overlying tectonic plates. These stresses lead to deformation in the lithosphere, resulting in phenomena such as faulting, folding, and crustal thickening. The study of stress and strain is fundamental in tectonophysics, as it helps explain the mechanisms behind earthquakes and mountain formation.

African lion populations have decreased by nearly 70% in the past 50 years. Were it not for some courageous activists that number might be even more catastrophic. Under the spiritual guidance of a wise medicine woman who saved her life in the African wilderness, Linda Tucker abandoned her high-powered career to return to the pride lands and follow her destiny as an appointed “keeper of the white lions.” African Sangomas, who are the indigenous African priests, recognize white lions as the direct messengers of the divine—embodying a sacred essence that balances our planet’s ecosystems, and brings true leadership among living beings. Working tirelessly against the enormous forces that are decimating this precious species Linda Tucker reveals her quest to save the white lions from extinction. (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

“A passionate and heartfelt call to care.”—Bruce Feiler, New York Times bestselling author of Walking the Bible and America’s Prophet
In You Are Here, Thomas Kostigen, the New York Times bestselling co-author of The Green Book, takes us to the most extreme environmental areas on the planet to show how what we do from the comfort of our own home affects people, places, and things everywhere. A timely, much-needed alarm that recalls Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth combined with a compelling travel narrative reminiscent of Anthony Bourdain with straight ahead Anderson Cooper-like reporting, You Are Here is “an intriguing and insightful account that deserves to be read by everyone” (Mark Plotkin, Time Magazine Hero for the Planet).
