Sinopsis

In "The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea (Vol. 1&2)," Gomes Eannes de Zurara meticulously documents the early Portuguese explorations and conquests along the West African coast during the 15th century. Written in a prose style characteristic of medieval chronicles, the text weaves historical fact with narrative flair, presenting a vivid account of the encounters between Europeans and indigenous peoples. This work not only charts the ambitious endeavors of Portuguese explorers but also reflects the era'Äôs complex interplay of commerce, conquest, and cultural exchange, situating it firmly within the canon of exploratory literature of the Age of Discovery. Gomes Eannes de Zurara, a contemporary of the events he chronicles, served as a royal secretary and chronicler in the court of Prince Henry the Navigator. His close association with influential figures in the maritime expansion of Portugal provided him unique access to firsthand accounts and documents. Zurara's personal investment in this period of exploration, coupled with his commitment to literary craft, allowed him to shape a narrative that elucidates both the triumphs and moral ambiguities of colonial ventures. This monumental work is recommended for scholars and general readers alike, as it serves as an essential primary source for understanding the motivations and consequences of early European imperialism. "The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea" offers a gripping lens through which to examine the profound historical transformations initiated by exploration, making it a vital addition to any library focused on world history.

It was phenomenally successful in the air, strikingly decisive on the ground—and suddenly the war in the Persian Gulf was over, with an overwhelming victory for the allied forces. But what really happened? Why did the air war work so well? Why did the massive, allied casualties many predicted for the ground phase never materialize? Why was it all so easy when American intelligence had said it would be so hard? And what was the impact of using a war plan devised to fight the Warsaw Pact against a developing nation? On this thought-provoking recording, some of NPR's top reporters—Neal Conan, Deborah Amos, Ted Clark, and Anne Garrels—examine these and other questions from the Gulf War.

Among the most interesting of the prehistoric eras is the Permian age, the most extreme period in the planet’s history. It spanned 47 million years, beginning with an ice age, warming, and ending with the most cataclysmic volcanic episode in the planet’s history. The great bulk of all life on the Earth was almost immediately snuffed out, barely crawling back over the following 10 to 30 million years, and it set the stage for the “Age of Dinosaurs.”
What is termed by some as the “Pennsylvanian” or “Carboniferous” period prepared the emergence of the Permian age. Named for the abundance of rocks from the period found in the state of Pennsylvania, many prefer the term “Silesian” or “Carboniferous” era. In the preceding “Mississippian era,” warm, shallow seas disappeared causing serious upheaval to marine life in a tendency toward glaciation.
“Significant glaciation” marks the beginning of the Carboniferous immediately preceding the Permian. Carboniferous glaciation began in the late Ordovician Period long before. The eventual Andean-Saharan glaciation, a minor ice age, occurred later in the Silurian Age. These were all remnants of the “Snowball Earth” period of the Cryogenian.
The resultant sea level drop as the Carboniferous ice age set in produced conditions much like that of today, with ice on both poles, wet tropics near the equator and temperate regions in between. Despite similar conditions, the Carboniferous lacked the output of greenhouse gases produced by humans.
Fragments of plates collided as continents were still fusing into the supercontinent Pangea. During glaciation, “latitudinal climactic belts were widespread.” Permian rocks have been found on all the continents and some have been displaced “considerable distances from their original latitudes” in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras that followed the Permian.

Gender is everywhere. Politicians argue over it, educational systems struggle to define it, and our friends, neighbors, and children explore it. More than ever before, young people are questioning their gender identities and redefining the role of gender in their lives. How should our society―and we as individuals (parents, teachers, friends)―respond?

In Gender Explained, Diane Ehrensaft, PhD, and Michelle Jurkiewicz, PsyD, separate medical fact from fear-mongering falsehoods and answer these questions: What should parents do when their child starts experiencing gender dysphoria? Which sports teams should transgender youth play on? How should schools teach young people about gender? And most important: What is gender-affirming care, and when should an individual have access to it?

With clear, expert guidance, this book is a safeguard against political vitriol, and it offers urgent protection for those among us who are transgender and/or nonbinary. Far more than an introduction to gender creativity, it is an invitation to develop compassion for everyone along the gender continuum.
