Beschreibung

In "No Refuge but in Truth," Goldwin Smith presents a compelling discourse on the nature of truth and its pivotal role in societal discourse and individual identity. Written with a distinctive blend of eloquence and critical insight, Smith navigates the tumultuous landscape of Victorian thought, employing a reflective literary style that marries philosophical inquiry with rhetorical prowess. This work emerges during a period marked by significant political and social upheaval, prompting Smith to explore truth not as an abstract concept, but as a lived experience that shapes both personal integrity and collective morality. Goldwin Smith, a prominent figure in 19th-century intellectual circles, was deeply influenced by his varied experiences, including his roles as a historian, journalist, and political commentator. His engagements with contemporary issues such as imperialism, education reform, and civil liberties informed his belief in truth as a necessary refuge amidst the chaos of modernity. Smith's own struggles with the prevailing ideologies of his time fueled his commitment to advocating for an unflinching exploration of truth in all its forms. Readers seeking an incisive examination of truth's multifaceted nature will find "No Refuge but in Truth" a vital addition to their literary repertoire. Smith's arguments resonate with the persistent search for authenticity and ethical clarity in today's world, making this work both timely and timeless. Delve into the pages of this essay to challenge your perceptions and reaffirm your own understanding of truth.

Russian Short Story The - Volume...

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature.

Perhaps an easier way to enjoy a wider selection of the Russian heritage, with its varied and glorious literary talents, is with the short story. These gems sparkle and beguile the mind with their characters and narrative, exploring facets of society and the human condition that more Western authors somehow find more difficult to navigate, or to explore, explain and relate to.

The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

In a land so vast it is unsurprising that it is a world almost unto itself. Cultures and landscapes of differing hues are packed together bound only by the wilful bonds and force of Empire.

The stories in this collection traverse the decades where one might be a serf under an absolute monarch, and the reality of that was pretty near to slavery, into an emancipation of sorts in the fields, or towns under the despotic will of landowners and the rich into the upheavals of Empire and then the overthrow of the ruling class and its replacement by the communists, who promised equality for all and delivered a society where the down-trodden remained the lowest yet vital cog of the state machine and its will.

Whilst Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov are a given in any Russian collection we also explore and include Andreyev, Korolenko, Turgenev, Blavatsky and many others to create a world rich and dense across a sprawling landscape of diverse people, riddled with the class and unfairness in perhaps some of the most turbulent times that Russia has ever experienced.

An indispensable guide to parents of hockey hopefuls

At a time of great change in hockey, Justin Davis exposes the dark underbelly of the journey from the minors to the big leagues

Hockey culture: it’s a commonly used phrase inside the game, glorifying sacrifice, toughness, loyalty, and a sense of identity. Justin Davis viewed this culture as something he was lucky enough to experience. After all, he’d won a Memorial Cup after leading the tournament in scoring, and he’d been drafted by the Washington Capitals. “In my mind,” he says, “I was the normal one.” Unfortunately, after stepping outside the game, he began to recognize the racism, sexual abuse and bullying that was so deeply ingrained in the sport. And then, as his own children grew into teenagers, the curtain was pulled back, the memories came rushing forward, and he was horrified: “Why was I naked in a bus bathroom for four hours with seven teammates? What happened to my brain, and why can’t I remember the simplest things? How did I end up living in a basement where the strangers upstairs were clearly engaged in domestic abuse?”

As it navigates the sport’s darkest corridors, Conflicted Scars shares the story of the common Canadian player and offers a guide for parents who need to know how and why a typical teenager with NHL dreams, from a small town, now lives anxiously, introvertedly, and battling emotional detachment.
