Beschreibung

Indigenous Mental Health addresses critical mental health challenges within Indigenous communities globally. It highlights the importance of culturally adapted healing and the need to understand the impact of historical trauma, such as colonization and systemic discrimination, on Indigenous well-being.

A key insight is the necessity of moving beyond Western-centric models to appreciate holistic, interconnected Indigenous views of mental health, incorporating cultural knowledge and tradition. The book uniquely centers Indigenous voices, exploring solutions that are culturally appropriate and community-driven.

It progresses by first establishing a historical context, then exploring Indigenous perspectives on mental health, including traditional healing practices, and finally examining specific, culturally sensitive interventions. This approach emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and decolonizing mental healthcare to foster genuine healing.

The US Congress - A Very Short...

Donald A. Ritchie, a congressional historian for forty years, takes listeners on a fascinating, behind-the-scenes tour of Capitol Hill, pointing out the key players, explaining their behavior, and translating parliamentary language into plain English. He also explores the essential necessity of compromise to accomplish anything significant in the legislative arena. However, recent events show that political polarization has hardened and produced gridlock. The 2020 election also produced a more diverse membership in terms of gender, ethnicity, religion, and ideology, with primary elections resulting in the defeat of moderate candidates, making bipartisan compromise harder to achieve.

Among the most significant events, the Senate ignored President Obama's last nomination to the Supreme Court and then adopted a "nuclear option" to streamline future Supreme Court confirmations. The House also twice impeached President Trump, processes that starkly expose the differences between the majority-rule requirements of the House and the super-majority requirements of the Senate. This new edition explains how the parties have changed in light of the unprecedented politics of the past four years, culminating in the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and how this development has affected both the House and the Senate.

Despite a general dearth of African American names rising to musical prominence during the years of Reconstruction, black talent existed in good measure for both popular and classical genres, and among the most notable musicians celebrated in the present day is composer Scott Joplin, who in his day earned the moniker “King of Ragtime.” Joplin’s use of ragtime as a piano genre was as natural to African American dances as the waltz was to Europeans. The new African-based musical language grew to such popularity that piano rags were programmed on formal classical programs. Originally employed as a verb, as in to “rag” a rhythm, the genre was first referred to as the “jig-piano” style. Ragtime features off-beat rhythms, a heavily accented first beat with the left hand making fast leaps to include the harmony. Pieces of the genre are as visually distinctive as they are in sound. Popular with honky-tonk pianists working along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, ragtime became the “predominant style of American popular music” by the end of the 19th century. Dance steps like the cakewalk, inspired by minstrel shows featuring modes of black banjo playing, were unlikely to be incorporated into white dance for many years to come, but white musicians incorporated the sound into their own daily repertoires as a pleasing style of melody and rhythm. The days of minstrel performances, in which white performers costumed themselves in black face without societal backlash, were eventually replaced by black performers such as Joplin and others like him. Once free from such mockery, black artists were free to produce musical offerings from the authentic culture. The term “rag,” according to Joplin’s use of the term, represented a musical evolution, an abrupt, edgy approach to the musical phrase, suggesting a “ragged movement.”
Scott Joplin: The Life and Legacy of the King of Ragtime profiles how he became one of 20th century music’s most influential figures.

Leaders are expected to be strong, dynamic, intelligent, and level-headed. As a leader, you may feel compelled to embody a "superhuman" standard or make personal sacrifices in order to get a project done well and on time. You might ignore the warning signs of mental health issues such as sleeplessness and fatigue. So, how can you break this destructive cycle, prioritize your mental health, and optimize performance?

This workbook offers skills and strategies based in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), to soothe stress, avoid exhaustion, and build the resilience required to show up as your best self. You'll gain a greater understanding of the specific psychological challenges inherent in leadership positions, the emotional toll it takes professionally and personally, and—most importantly—how to manage these challenges effectively.

As a leader, admitting that you are struggling can be difficult. You may have feelings of shame, or fears of being stigmatized. But when weighed against the increasing costs to your mental, physical, and emotional well-being, you simply can't afford to ignore it!

    Quirky History - Maritime...

John Quirk loves history, drawing and boats and these three elements come together in this attractive and entertaining book. He has sought out obscure episodes or familiar events from the past and written engagingly about them, illustrated with his excellent colour cartoons. Where possible he relates the historical happenings and maritime moments to the present day, be it when tracing the history of the screw, misinformation (fake news) during the Second World War, plague ships in the fourteenth century, or Russia's ill-fated war with Japan in 1904. The events covered range from Henry V's invasion of France in 1415, consisting mainly of chartered French ships and paid for partially by Dick Whittington, to episodes in the Second World War, like the Somali Camel Corps capturing a German U-boat. Other historic figures involved include Horatio Nelson, Napoleon, Rudolf Diesel and Lawrence of Arabia. The 25 stories and over 100 cartoons are a treasure-trove of compelling, salt-infused, tales told with imagination and humour, with an eye on the present day, which will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in maritime history (or even just history).
