Summary

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: G. K. Chesterton, the man beyond the writer

First published in 1912, “Manalive” is a book by English author and philosopher G. K. Chesterton detailing a popular theme both in his own philosophy, and in Christianity, of the "holy fool," such as in Dostoevsky's “The Idiot” and Cervantes' “Don Quixote.”

“Manalive” tells the story of Innocent Smith, a colossal and comic man who bounds onto the grounds of Brighton House – a manor filled with those who have forgotten the immediacy of existence – and proceeds to awaken life into its residents. Yet when the spirited and mirthful Smith is accused of murder, burglary and unfaithfulness to his wife, it is up the residents of Brighton House to form a court and defend his innocence against the masters of modern science and psychology.

“Manalive” is a wonderfully entertaining and comic tale the goal of which is to bring people to life, to make them recognize the world around them, and at the same time to see the boyish wonder which serves as the foundation for this mirth at life.

There is one thing that the reader may count on when picking up one of Chesterton’s novels, and that is simply that there is no way of knowing what to expect. There is always an air of mystery, of danger, of humor, of depth, and without fail a little absurdity brought about in attempt to awaken the reader to life. Of course, "Manalive" fulfils all these expectations.

At the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, young Jonathan Livingston Seagull caught the world’s notice as he sought to break beyond the pitiful life of those average mortals populating the earth. Conquering all, entering into the eternal bliss, Jonathan left us, as did this magical spiritual age of enlightenment. What happened?
In that era many seagulls emulated Jonathan; their stories never told. But one mighty bird, Johann Earlington, a contemporary of Jonathan, too looked to greater heights, too wanted answers, and too found the ultimate abode; but today, forty years after, his efforts lie in ruins. The world, his magnificent new world, has come full circle back to the pain of boredom and hopelessness of repetition.
As our story begins, Johann is doubting his own accomplishments; rising to great heights, finding the most glorious of all heavens, lovingly showing this new way to any gull who would listen. But the new age is dead, and there seems no resolution.
The end of the old brings the beginning of the new when there emerges a teacher, the Lord himself, in all majesty of Jesus, Buddha, and the still small voice. He shows Johann his errors and gives him new direction. Join Johann as he once and for all learns the true way to enlightenment. The simplicity of it may surprise you.
This author gives honor to Jonathan Livingston Seagull author Richard Bach who first aroused an impatient age, upon which this book is born.

He was her "perfect" gentleman - until he decided she wasn't "lady" enough. Jane is a devoted housemaid who spent three years building a future around William. She beamed with pride as he climbed from shop porter to a "gentleman" in silk hats, never realizing he was climbing right out of her life. When a sophisticated rival lures him away with piano music and social airs, Jane is left with a shattered heart and a house filled with bitter silence. But H.G. Wells doesn't give us a tragic victim. As William’s wedding day approaches, Jane’s grief turns into a quiet, calculated resolve. She isn't just going to watch him walk down the aisle; she’s bringing a heavy bag and a score to settle. Will she win him back, or will she ensure his "perfect" day is one he’ll never forget? Witty and wickedly sharp, "The Jilting of Jane" is a classic satire about social ambition, heartbreak, and the unpredictable power of a woman pushed too far. Press play and witness the unforgettable moment Jane finally gets her say!
