  The Cultural Revolution, which lasted from 1966 to 1976, was a decade of intense political and social upheaval in China. It was initiated by Mao Zedong, the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, as a means to reassert his ideological dominance and eliminate perceived threats within the party and society. The roots of the Cultural Revolution can be traced back to the aftermath of the Great Leap Forward, growing political divisions, and Mao’s desire to reshape China’s ideological landscape. 
  One of the key factors that led to the Cultural Revolution was Mao’s declining influence following the disastrous Great Leap Forward (1958–1962). This economic and social campaign, aimed at transforming China into a communist utopia through rapid industrialization and collectivization, resulted in widespread famine and the deaths of millions. The failures of the Great Leap Forward weakened Mao’s credibility, and he was forced to step back from day-to-day governance, allowing more pragmatic leaders such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping to implement economic reforms. These leaders promoted policies that prioritized economic stability over radical communist ideology, which Mao saw as a betrayal of the revolution’s goals. 
  In response to his diminished authority, Mao sought to reassert control by launching an ideological campaign against those he deemed “capitalist roaders” within the party. By the early 1960s, internal power struggles intensified as Mao and his radical supporters, including Lin Biao and Jiang Qing, clashed with moderate leaders advocating for a more pragmatic approach to governance. Mao viewed the growing influence of his rivals as a direct threat to his vision for China. To counter their policies, he began promoting the idea of a new revolutionary movement that would purify Chinese society and eliminate counterrevolutionary elements.

  Two great streams of Northern immigration met on the shores of Britain during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. The Norsemen from the deep fiords of Western Norway, fishing and raiding along the coasts, pushed out their adventurous boats into the Atlantic, and in the dawn of Northern history we find them already settled in the Orkney and Shetland Isles, whence they raided and settled southward to Caithness, Fife, and Northumbria on the east, and to the Hebrides, Galloway, and Man on the western coast. Fresh impetus was given to this outward movement by the changes of policy introduced by Harald Fairhair, first king of Norway (872–933). Through him a nobler type of emigrant succeeded the casual wanderer, and great lords and kings’ sons came over to consolidate the settlements begun by humbler agencies. Iceland was at the same time peopled by a similar stock. The Dane, contemporaneously with the Norseman, came by a different route. Though he seems to have been the first to invade Northumbria (if Ragnar and his sons were really Danes), his movement was chiefly round the southern shores of England, passing over by way of the Danish and Netherland coast up the English Channel, and round to the west. Both streams met in Ireland, where a sharp and lengthened contest was fought out between the two nations, and where both took deep root, building cities and absorbing much of the commerce of the country.The Viking was at first simply a bold adventurer, but a mixture of trading and raiding became a settled practice with large numbers of Norsemen, who, when work at home was slack and the harvest was sown or reaped, filled up the time by pirate inroads on their own or neighboring lands. Hardy sailors and fearless fighters they were; and life would have seemed too tame had it meant a continuous course of peaceful farming or fishing. New possessions and new conquests were the salt of life.

  "Capitalism" was first coined in France in the early nineteenth century. It began as a fusion of two distinct sets of ideas. The first involved thinking about public debt and war finance. The second involved thinking about the division of labor. Sonenscher shows that thinking about the first has changed radically over time. Funding welfare has been added to funding warfare, bringing many new questions in its wake. Thinking about the second set of ideas has offered far less room for maneuver. The division of labor is still the division of labor and the debates and discussions that it once generated have now been largely forgotten. By exploring what lay behind the earlier distinction before it collapsed and was eroded by the passage of time, Sonenscher shows why the present range of received ideas limits our political options and the types of reform we might wish for.
