Beschreibung

After writing a commentary on the book of Daniel and dedicating a book to the theme of the return of Jesus, I turn to the book of Revelation to comment on it, showing the harmony of its contents with the prophetic passages of Daniel and the New Testament. I am convinced that the time is truly close and that the study of biblical prophecies makes more sense today than ever before.

Idolatry is a central theme in Scripture; yet most of us presume that because we don't bow at the altar of a statue that we are idol-free. The truth is, all of us need God to reveal our heart's greatest longing and for Him to give us clean hands and a pure heart. In this powerful series, Nathan Johnson explores the biblical concepts of idols, altars, and our need to forsake all substitutes to pursue God alone.
This is an Ellerslie Live Teaching Series from Nathan Johnson, recorded live in front of an audience. When you purchase this audiobook, it comes with an accompanying PDF of the message notes.

Philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah explores how early social scientists developed our modern understandings of society through their theories of religion The foundations of modern social science were built on the study of religion, the acclaimed thinker Kwame Anthony Appiah argues. Delving into the intellectual currents of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he investigates how formative thinkers—notably Edward Burnett Tylor, Émile Durkheim, Georg Simmel, and Max Weber—grappled with the concepts of society and religion as interdependent categories. Appiah shows how their efforts to define religion, or evade the task, mark the power and limitations of social thought in ways that persist among theorists today. Religion was not an object of study but a framework through which early social scientists established sociology as a discipline. Appiah also examines recent work in both interpretive sociology and evolutionary and cognitive psychology about the mechanisms through which communities form beliefs and values—while underscoring the enduring significance of these earlier debates for contemporary social thought. Throughout, he intertwines storytelling, historical analysis, and philosophical reflection to show how our ideas about society and culture have been, and continue to be, forged in dialogue with religious questions.

"Sad, honest, hopeful, funny, instructive. . . . the very best of a memoir" (Mike Cope, author of Megan's Secrets)

When we grow up Christian, it is always in a small place. At first, we don't even know it is a small place. It's just our place, and it feels like home. We launch out from this small place, and we discover that the Christian way is longer and richer than we ever knew.

Noted theologian Leonard Allen's story begins at age eight in his father's bookroom—and with an emerging cluster of questions about the faith he inherited. The search for answers led him on a long journey, including a harrowing desert season, then a season of newness he had not imagined.

You will recognize the characters in this story. You will smile, laugh, and feel some of the grief along the way. You'll get glimpses into the rich texture of our lives—the power of memory, the struggles with selfhood, the need for forgiveness, the surprises of grace.

"If you've come to this book with a sincere desire to attain union with God in prayer - and you read Early Christian Spirituality with con- sideration, care, and with a working highlighter - Torkington's words might be the catalyst to take you to heaven." - Kevin Wells

A group of men who had lost hope over two thousand years ago were set afire with love, and hope was reborn within them. Three thousand onlookers were set afire by the same love that brought hope for them, too; a new Church was born. This book details more clearly than ever the God-given spirituality that Jesus Christ first lived, loved, and practised for himself before introducing it into the early Church. It details the new Mystical Spirituality that was its heart and soul and shows how it was understood and practised more widely and more deeply in those first Christian centuries than in any other century since. This profound practice is particularly true at the beginning of the twenty-first century when the Mystical Theology that was the leitmotiv of early Christianity seems not just to have been forgotten but positively rejected. This book insists that we must cast aside the wrongs and the wrongdoing that have since disfigured it and return to our long-lost spiritual heritage without delay. For without it, Christian reform, renewal, or renaissance (call it what you will) will be impossible, and the secular 'spiritualities' of our "me-me" world will continue to dominate.
