Synopsis

"Puberty is the age of provocation. This is also the case in this novella, which records the thoughts of a young woman who thinks nothing of political correctness and, of course, upholds sadomasochism. What at first glance sounds like another provocative book of the "Wetlands" brand turns out after the first few pages to be a drama of the human psyche presented in rich snippets or puzzle pieces, which can be observed more and more during puberty and remains with some people forever. In the process, it becomes apparent that literary sadomasochism, i.e. not the original one, is still suitable as an allegory to portray a generation educated by materialism and superficiality, as only brands & advertising, media, porn and a lack of role models could produce. Consequently, the protagonist takes down the human rubbish, but loses herself in her own fanaticism, inviting morality, religion and ethics themselves to an abnormal orgy."

James cautions against rash action, and she heeds this advice… until one of the homicide detectives updates her on the proceedings.

Claire needs to find out what happened, but she doesn’t possess investigative skills. She needs someone who understands crime scenes. Better yet, she needs someone who understands the criminal mind. After finding the ideal person, they begin their own investigation. Like a modern Midsummer Night’s Dream, an ethereal and haunting novel about a young spy who enchanted by a species of half-swan, half-human creatures—an obsession that ultimately leads her to question her own existence—and sanity.
In the not-too-distant future, a young spy named Elísabet Eva finds herself mentally unraveling following an assignment in Paris. Everything in Elísabet’s life in the city—her friends, social engagements, and late nights—revolved around her work as a spy with the Special Unit. To regain her mental balance, Elísabet finds herself taking long solitary walks near the lake.
One day, she sees two strange beasts emerging from the water—a pair of seemingly mythical creatures, human woman above the waist, swan below. Curious, she follows them through tangles of thickets to a clearing . . . and into a strange new reality.
Elísabet’s walks become regular visits to these swan women. As she earns their trust, the creatures reveal the enigma of their secret existence and their desire to reproduce. Pulled further and further into the swanfolk’s monomaniacal (and often violent) quest, Elísabet finds her own mind growing increasingly untrustworthy. Ultimately, she is forced to reckon with both the consequences of her involvement with these unusual beings and her own past—and face a truth she’s carefully tried to evade.

Into the ordered life of thirty-three-year-old Edward Netherford comes the Brockman family. Loud, brash and demanding the return of three Impressionist paintings which have been retained - illegally, they claim—by their late father’s second wife. Edward’s legal services—and his even temperament - have never been more severely tested as letters to the second Mrs. Brockman in York remain ignored and unanswered. It soon becomes clear that some more positive move has to be made. Under pressure to make an early settlement, Edward decides on a personal interview and travels to York, planning to mix business with pleasure by staying at an old school friend’s hotel. But stormy weather and a calamitous fire at the Cross Keys force him into much less suitable accommodation miles out of the city - and into the company of a beautiful young woman whose chaotic lifestyle proves to be a surprisingly pleasant diversion from the thorny question of the missing Brockman inheritance.
