Synopsis

"Puberty is the age of provocation. This is also the case in this novella, which records the thoughts of a young woman who thinks nothing of political correctness and, of course, upholds sadomasochism. What at first glance sounds like another provocative book of the "Wetlands" brand turns out after the first few pages to be a drama of the human psyche presented in rich snippets or puzzle pieces, which can be observed more and more during puberty and remains with some people forever. In the process, it becomes apparent that literary sadomasochism, i.e. not the original one, is still suitable as an allegory to portray a generation educated by materialism and superficiality, as only brands & advertising, media, porn and a lack of role models could produce. Consequently, the protagonist takes down the human rubbish, but loses herself in her own fanaticism, inviting morality, religion and ethics themselves to an abnormal orgy."

It's 1780, days after Benedict Arnold flees to the British when his treasonous plot to surrender the American fort at West Point is discovered and Gideon's Revolution is about to begin. General George Washington orders a secret mission for two Continental Army soldiers to go behind enemy lines, abduct Arnold, and return him to his countrymen to be tried and hanged.

Washington selects one of the soldiers, Gideon Wheatley, for the mission because Arnold would trust him. Wheatley fought under Arnold's command at Saratoga and tended to the gravely wounded general for several months at Albany's military hospital. After feigning desertion to the British Army to join Arnold's corps of loyalists, Wheatley and his comrade John Champe seek out Washington's spies in New York and develop a plan to seize the traitor. But when the abduction is foiled, the soldiers are trapped by their own deceit and forced to fight alongside Arnold's raiding army, as if they were traitors themselves.

Years after the war, pressed by memories that haunt him and seeking redemption, Wheatley must decide whether he alone can exact revenge on his former friend and commander, a decision that sends him across the Atlantic to London, to find and confront Arnold.

"I have never been more myself than when I was someone else."

In The Confessions of Arsène Lupin, the "Gentleman Burglar" becomes his own biographer. This collection of nine thrilling stories takes readers behind the scenes of Lupin's most celebrated ruses. From the mysterious "Sign of the Shadow" to the high-stakes drama of "The Invisible Prisoner," Lupin recounts his adventures with a mixture of wit, arrogance, and surprising sentimentality. We see him not just as a criminal mastermind, but as a man who values honor, rescues the innocent, and treats every heist as a work of fine art.

A Deeper Look at the Legend: These stories provide a rare look into Lupin's moral code and his past. Whether he is returning a stolen heirloom to a family in need or outmaneuvering his lifelong rival, Inspector Ganimard, Lupin reveals the motivations that drive his life of crime. It is in these "confidences" that we learn what truly makes a gentleman thief tick.

Masterful Short-Form Mystery: Leblanc is at the height of his powers here, crafting tight, fast-paced narratives filled with secret codes, hidden trapdoors, and brilliant deductive reasoning. Each story is a self-contained puzzle that invites the reader to try and outguess the master before the final reveal.

Why It Is a Must-Read: For fans of the Netflix series or classic mystery enthusiasts, this book is essential. It serves as the perfect entry point for newcomers and a deep dive for longtime fans into the psychology of a character who remains as charming and mysterious today as he was over a century ago.
