Donna Bevan-Lee had a tough childhood. When her father was feeling playful, he roped her by the foot like a rodeo calf, yanking her to the ground every time the rope connected. In darker moods, he did far worse, his brutality excused by a complicit church. The abuse she suffered had profound and lasting consequences.
Too many adults have similar histories. Roughly a quarter of American children experience complex trauma resulting from abuse, neglect, catastrophic illness, or other adversity. Because such trauma affects the developing brain, it's not something we outgrow; it permanently alters our thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behavior, often without our awareness. It derails our plans, sabotages our relationships, and convinces us that we're unworthy of happiness. It makes us vulnerable to addiction, obesity. depression, anxiety, chronic illness, and early death. It is a challenge like no other.
Dr. Bevan-Lee met the challenge of her childhood and helped other survivors to meet theirs. Now she has distilled her history. cutting-edge research, and four decades of clinical experience into a book for adult survivors of childhood trauma. Full of up-to-date information, practical help, compelling stories, and clear-eyed encouragement, this book is a comprehensive guide to recognizing and overcoming childhood trauma, written by someone who has been there.

This book embarks on a journey into the heart of the American experience, exploring the enduring legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X within the complex social and political landscape of contemporary America. While their methods differed dramatically, their shared aspiration for a more just and equitable future for Black Americans remains undeniably powerful. We examine how the philosophies of these two iconic figures offer not only valuable historical insights but also actionable pathways for navigating present-day challenges. The rise of racial tensions under the Trump administration, fueled by divisive rhetoric and policies, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent struggle for racial justice and equality. The book considers how the policies and pronouncements of figures such as Donald Trump and Elon Musk have exacerbated existing inequalities, underscoring the critical need to confront systemic racism. We delve into the ways in which both King's vision of integration and Malcolm X's advocacy for Black empowerment offer complementary yet ultimately convergent strategies to address systemic racism and inequality in 2025 and beyond. This exploration is not simply an academic exercise but a call to action, urging readers to engage with the past in order to forge a more just and equitable future.

    Athenian Agora and Roman Forum...

The center of political and commercial interaction in the Ancient Greek polis was the agora. The word essentially means a gathering place or an open space, and in all Greek city states, the agora was central to all aspects of daily life and commerce. As the agora developed as a civic space, particularly from the 6th century BCE onward in Athens, the architectural splendor of the buildings associated with it became an ever more obvious demonstration of the power and glory of Athenian democracy. In its earliest forms, an agora in maritime cities was invariably situated near the sea, while in inland urban centers, it was usually located at the foot of the hill that normally provided the city’s ultimate defense. The agora was always the oldest part of any city and, as such, and as well as being the commercial hub of the area, also became the center of the religious and political life of the polis. In Homer’s time, an agora might have seats for the comfort of the citizens that had assembled to consult with one another. The city’s oldest sanctuaries were always located either in or very close to the agora itself, and the first festive games were held in its open space.
The Roman Empire is the most famous in history, and the center of the far-reaching empire’s activities was located in the Forum, a low area between the Capitoline and Palatine hills in Rome. The topography held a great deal of significance for Romans, and consequently so many layers of myth were laid on top of the landscape and buildings that it is difficult to separate legend from actual historical fact. As a low-lying area near the Tiber river, the Forum was subject to much flooding, and even into the 20th century, the Forum area could flood upwards of over 40 feet above sea level. This would factor significantly in the imagination of Romans, who later ascribed the flooding with saving the city’s founders, Romulus and Remus, from execution.
