Synopsis

Ten years after the start of the Malian crisis, political and security instability in the Sahel have changed in scale and nature, and spilled over across national frontiers. The border region between Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger has become the new epicentre of insecurity.
The comeback of military actors on the political scene, and the support provided by large parts of the population to post-coup military juntas is evidence of poor governance and a severe deterioration in the legitimacy of elected authorities. In this complex scenario, the initiatives of external partners affect regional balances, making the Sahel a major theatre for power competition.
How did the crisis evolve over the past decade? What are the main drivers behind local, regional and international dynamics? What prospects for regional stability?

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (November 30, 1874 - January 24, 1965) was born in Oxfordshire, England, of mixed English and American parentage. He would become a statesman, soldier, and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 -- during the Second World War -- and again from 1951 to 1955. Apart from two years between 1922 and 1924, he was a Member of Parliament from 1900 to 1964 as both a member of the Liberal Party and, later, as member and leader of the Conservative Party. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending Europe's liberal democracy against the spread of fascism. The following recording is Churchill's historic "This was their finest hour" speech delivered to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 18, 1940.

Uranium is best known for the destructive power of the atom bombs, which ushered in the nuclear era at the end of World War II, but given the effectiveness of nuclear power, nuclear power plants were constructed around the developed world during the second half of the 20th century. While nuclear power plants were previously not an option and thus opened the door to new, more efficient, and more affordable forms of energy for domestic consumption, the use of nuclear energy understandably unnerved people living during the Cold War and amidst ongoing nuclear detonations. After all, the damage wrought on Hiroshima and Nagasaki made clear to everyone what nuclear energy was capable of inflicting, and the health problems encountered by people exposed to the radiation also demonstrated the horrific side effects that could come with the use of nuclear weapons or the inability to harness the technology properly.
For decades, it was believed that the first major accident at a nuclear power plant took place at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, which took nearly 15 years and $1 billion to fully clean up after that disaster. However, Three Mile Island paled in comparison to Chernobyl, which to this day remains the most notorious nuclear accident in history. Located in the Ukraine, the Chernobyl power plant was undergoing experiments in the early morning hours of April 26, 1986 when it suffered a series of explosions in one of its nuclear reactors, killing over 30 people at the plant and spread radioactive fallout across a wide swath of the Soviet Union. Although the Soviets would try to cover up just how disastrous the accident at Chernobyl was, it was impossible to hide the full extent of the damage given that radioactive material was affecting Western Europe as well. All told, the accident caused an estimated $18 billion in damages.

Empathy is the ability to emotionally understand what other people are going through, see things through their eyes, and put yourself in their shoes. Essentially, it is placing yourself in another person's shoes and experiencing what they are experiencing. When you witness someone suffering, you may be able to imagine yourself in their shoes and empathize with their situation. While most people are aware of their own sentiments and emotions, getting into another person's head can be more difficult. People who can empathize can "walk a mile in another's shoes," as it were. It enables people to comprehend the feelings of others.Watching another person suffering and reacting with apathy or even hate is unfathomable for many people. However, some people who respond this way plainly show empathy is not a universal response to others' pain. Empathy is thought to have crucial neurological components, according to research. The ability to mirror and duplicate the emotional responses that others would feel if they were in comparable conditions. While empathy can sometimes falter, most people can sympathize with others in many scenarios. This ability to perceive things from someone else's point of view and empathize with their feelings is crucial in our social lives. Empathy permits us to comprehend others and, in many cases, motivates us to act to alleviate another's suffering.

Stories that history forgot . . . but readers will remember

"The only thing new in the world," said Harry S. Truman, "is the history you don't know." In this fresh and fascinating collection of historical vignettes, Martin W. Sandler (author of Resolute and Atlantic Ocean) restores to memory important events, people, and developments that have been lost to time.

Though barely known today, these are major historical stories, from Ziryab, an eighth-century black slave whose influence on music, cuisine, fashion, and manners still reverberates, to Cahokia, a twelfth century city north of the Rio Grande, which at its zenith contained a population estimated to have been as high as 40,000 (more than any contemporary European city), to the worst peacetime maritime disaster ever, the explosion and sinking of the Sultana on the Mississippi in 1865.

These tales are far from trivia; they illuminate little-known American and foreign achievements, ingenuity, heroics, blunders, and tragedies that changed the course of history and resonate today.
