Sinossi

Giorgio Vasari's monumental work, "Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects," spanning ten volumes, serves as a cornerstone of art historiography from the Renaissance period. This comprehensive series not only chronicles the lives and contributions of influential artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo but also encapsulates the evolving artistic principles of the time. Vasari's narrative style, rich with anecdote and artistic commentary, situates each artist'Äôs achievements within the broader cultural and historical framework, marking a shift towards the modern conception of the artist as a creative individual. His keen observations and personal insights provide invaluable context, making this work a pivotal resource for understanding Renaissance art's aesthetic developments and its social ramifications. Vasari, himself a painter and architect, was profoundly influenced by the vibrant creative environment of 16th-century Italy. Born in Arezzo in 1511, he was not merely an observer but an active participant in the artistic dialogue of his era. His firsthand experiences, combined with his extensive network among artists and patrons, gifted him with unique perspectives, forging a personal narrative intertwined with the artistic legacies he recorded. These experiences informed his ambition to legitimize art history as a discipline and to celebrate the genius of his contemporaries. This essential volume is highly recommended for scholars, students, and art enthusiasts alike. Vasari's narrative offers not just historical insight but also an emotional connection to the figures who shaped the trajectory of Western art. Readers will be enriched by the breadth of knowledge contained within these pages, gaining not only appreciation for the masters of the past but also an understanding of the enduring influence of their craft.

For over a century, cinephiles and film scholars have had to grapple with an ugly artifact that sits at the beginnings of film history. D. W. Griffith's profoundly racist epic, The Birth of a Nation, inspired controversy and protest at its 1915 release and was defended as both a true history of Reconstruction (although it was based on fiction) and a new achievement in cinematic art. Paul McEwan examines the long and shifting history of its reception, revealing how the film became not just a cinematic landmark but also an influential force in American aesthetics and intellectual life.

In every decade since 1915, filmmakers, museums, academics, programmers, and film fans have had to figure out how to deal with this troublesome object, and their choices have profoundly influenced both film culture and the notion that films can be works of art. Some critics tried to set aside the film's racism and concentrate on the form, while others tried to relegate that racism safely to the past. McEwan argues that from the earliest film retrospectives in the 1920s to the rise of remix culture in the present day, controversies about this film and its meaning have profoundly shaped our understandings of film, race, and art.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception; Depending on one's perspective, it is viewed as evidence of imperial greatness or as a beacon of decay and demise. In historiography, the conquest of Constantinople is sometimes cited as one of the events that marked the transition from medieval Europe to modern times.

In this era of climate crisis, in which our very futures are at stake, sustainability is a global imperative. Yet we tend to associate sustainability, nature, and the environment with distant places, science, and policy. The truth is that everything is environmental, from transportation to taxes, work to love, cities to cuisine.

This book is the first to examine contemporary Singapore from an ecocultural lens, looking at the ways that Singaporean life and culture is deeply entangled with the nonhuman lives that flourish all around us. The authors represent a new generation of cultural critics and environmental thinkers, who will inherit the future we are creating today. From chilli crab to Tiger Beer, Changi Airport to Pulau Semakau, O-levels to orang minyak films, these essays offer fresh perspectives on familiar subjects, prompting us to recognise the incredible urgency of climate change and the need to transform our ways of thinking, acting, learning, living, and governing so as to maintain a stable planet and a decent future.

The first book to celebrate the miniature-scale model The Panorama of the City of New York.
An awe-inspiring metropolis in miniature, The Panorama of the City of New York has achieved cult-like status with New Yorkers and serves as a locus of memory for visitors from around the globe. This is the first book to fully celebrate The Panorama, featuring accessible text and photographs of its conception, creation, and enjoyment.
The Panorama was one of the most successful attractions at the 1964–65 World's Fair, with millions enjoying what was billed as an indoor helicopter tour of New York. Comprising an area of 9,335 square feet and built to a scale of 1:1200 (where one inch equals 100 feet), the original 1964 mini city was updated multiple times before its last renovation in 1992. Within the 320 square miles of New York City represented on The Panorama, you can find 850,000 buildings, more than 100 bridges, and almost all of the city's parks and streets.
Now part of the permanent exhibition at the Queens Museum, the Panorama brings the magic of New York to life to thousands of visitors each year.

The Tang Dynasty, one of the most prosperous and influential periods in Chinese history, lasted from 618 to 907 CE. Often referred to as a golden age, it was marked by significant cultural, political, and economic developments that shaped the trajectory of Chinese civilization. The dynasty succeeded the Sui Dynasty, which had fallen due to internal strife and excessive military campaigns, and it laid the foundation for many of the political and cultural features that would characterize Chinese history for centuries. The Tang Dynasty's legacy is still visible in the arts, governance, and cultural exchanges that continue to influence China today.
The founding of the Tang Dynasty is attributed to Li Yuan, who became Emperor Gaozu after a successful rebellion against the Sui Dynasty in 618. His reign was followed by that of his son, Emperor Taizong, one of the most renowned rulers in Chinese history. Under their leadership, the Tang Empire quickly expanded its territories, establishing control over much of present-day China and extending its influence across Central Asia, Korea, and parts of Southeast Asia. This expansion was not only military but also cultural, as the Tang Dynasty became a melting pot of diverse peoples, cultures, and ideas.
Politically, the Tang Dynasty introduced several innovations that helped maintain its stability and success. It perfected the imperial examination system, which allowed for a more meritocratic approach to selecting government officials, and it expanded the civil service, ensuring that a large and efficient bureaucracy could handle the empire’s vast territory. The legal system, known as the Tang Code, was influential in shaping the governance of China for centuries and served as a model for other East Asian countries.
