Synopsis

Talker is an interview zine about performance by Giles Bailey.Issue #8 is a conversation with Paul Maheke.Born in France and now based in London, Paul’s work has been exhibited widely and, at the time of this conversation, his most recent performance Sènsa, developed with musician Nkisi and lighting designer Ariel Efraim Ashbel had just been presented at Performa festival in New York. Paul’s own dancing body is a central feature of his practice and we discuss the development of this in his recent projects. He also describes the significance of others in his creative process and his ambition to create events and share practice rather than produce images through dance.Giles Bailey is an artist based in London. He works with performance, using texts, video fragments and choreographies to explore how knowledge and meaning are generated through relationships with others. Roy Orbison - King of Hearts

Clad in black with dark shades, Roy Orbison had a mystique, style, and voice that were unmistakable and singularly different from his famous peers of the 1950s and '60s. Born in Vernon, Texas, Roy was the son of a guitar-playing oil worker. Already a music fan by age six, Roy went on to form a high school band. Honky-tonk gigs followed. Then a contract at Elvis Presley's label, Sun Records, where Roy found mentors and friends among the likes of Carl Perkins. Following a shift to Monument Records, he shared a bill with a group called the Beatles, who were huge fans of his.After experimenting with different styles, Roy edged closer to a sound all his own. He found it with smash hits, including "Only the Lonely," "Crying," and "Oh, Pretty Woman," songs heavy with pathos and remarkable vocals. It was gold. But what lay ahead was a professional downswing, and personal tragedy with the death of his wife and two sons. Twenty lean years followed. Yet Roy Orbison was far from over. Amid the rockabilly revival of the 1980s and the formation of the British-American supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, Roy's comeback was legendary. Asked how he'd like to be remembered, Roy said, "One day when they are mentioning people who had an impact, if they just mention me among the rest of the guys and gals, it would be great." Designer, activist, and educator Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller is legendary for her  
decades of scholarship and advocacy, and as a touchstone and conscience for the  
design profession. In HERE: Where the Black Designers Are, Holmes-Miller  
documents the history of—and answers to—the question she has been asking for  
decades: “Where are the Black designers?”  
Holmes-Miller explores this essential question through the lens of her own  
development as a designer and leader, beginning with her own family and its rich  
multiethnic history. She narrates her experiences as a design student at Rhode  
Island School of Design (RISD), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and Pratt  
Institute, leading up to her oft-cited Pratt thesis examining barriers to success for  
Black designers. Holmes-Miller describes the work of her eponymous studio for  
noted clients that included NASA, Time Inc., and the nascent Black Entertainment  
Television (BET), as well as the story of her later critiques of the industry in Print 
magazine and other design publications. Holmes-Miller also recounts the parallel  
history of collective efforts by fellow scholars and advocates over the past fifty  
years to identify and celebrate Black designers. 
HERE is part memoir, part historical investigation, and an urgent call for justice  
and recognition for Black designers.
