Synopsis

In "Wood and Garden: Notes and Thoughts, Practical and Critical, of a Working Amateur," Gertrude Jekyll presents a compelling exploration of the interconnection between horticulture and craftsmanship. This work skillfully weaves practical gardening tips with philosophical reflections, revealing Jekyll's profound understanding of the natural world. Written in a clear, engaging style, the book encapsulates her holistic approach to gardening, wherein each plant is considered not just for its beauty but for its place within the larger ecosystem. Her insights deftly align with the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th century, emphasizing the importance of individual creativity in harmony with nature. Gertrude Jekyll, a prominent gardener, writer, and designer, dedicated her life to elevating the art of gardening. Influenced by her architectural background and her collaborations with leading figures of her time, such as Sir Edwin Lutyens, Jekyll sought to establish gardens as integral extensions of living spaces. Her work reflects a deep reverence for the rustic and the natural, which undoubtedly informed her approach in "Wood and Garden," as she merges aesthetics with a practical understanding of gardening. "Wood and Garden" is a must-read for enthusiasts of gardening and literary nature, offering rich insights into the beauty of cultivating one'Äôs own space. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a curious beginner, Jekyll's expertise and poetic observations will inspire you to engage more deeply with the world of plants and to consider the artistry involved in gardening.

    NIRVANA
THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

Nirvana, formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, was an American rock band that significantly impacted the music scene. The band, led by Kurt Cobain, achieved mainstream success by popularizing alternative rock and ending the dominance of hair metal. Their sound, described as grunge, alternative rock, and punk rock, fused pop melodies with noise. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" propelled their album Nevermind to diamond certification. Despite a short mainstream career, Nirvana sold over 75 million records worldwide and received numerous awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. The band's legacy continues to influence modern rock culture.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Nirvana went through several names before settling on their final one, including Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew, Bliss, and Ted Ed Fred. The band chose the name Nirvana because Kurt Cobain wanted a name that was "kind of beautiful or nice and pretty instead of a mean, raunchy punk name."

Nirvana's first single was a cover of Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz," released on the independent label Sub Pop. Their first interview was with John Robb in Sounds magazine, which made their release its single of the week.

The recording sessions for Nirvana's first album, Bleach, cost $606.17, which was supplied by Jason Everman. Everman didn't actually play on the album, but was given a credit to make him feel more at home in the band.

Although Bleach was a favorite of college radio stations, Kurt Cobain was upset with Sub Pop's lack of promotion and distribution of the album. The band's music was also changing, with songs becoming "poppier" and about emotional conflicts, rather than anger.

This story tells the frustrating but sometimes humorous journey of the author's interactions with the virtual world where she combats chat bots, racks her withering brain for passwords, almost has a hissyfit at the supermarket checkout, accidentally buys online goods she doesn't want and gets all scrambled regarding pins, passwords and cyber theft. She used to have a childhood toffee stall to raise money for Freedom From Hunger. Now emails remind her to help save the world, the planet, combat animal cruelty and the climate crisis. Some days it takes nerves to turn on her social devices.
