Beschreibung

Escaping the stifling industrial gloom of England, a group of travelers finds liberation and moral confusion under the bright skies of Italy. Old values crumble as art, passion, and freedom challenge their Puritanical upbringing. The novel serves as a compelling contrast between the repressed North and the sensual, emancipated South.

Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.
I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree. The tree was planted in the middle of a great round table, and towered high above their heads. It was brilliantly lighted by a multitude of little tapers; and everywhere sparkled and glittered with bright objects. There were rosy–cheeked dolls, hiding behind the green leaves; and there were real watches (with movable hands, at least, and an endless capacity of being wound up) dangling from innumerable twigs; there were French–polished tables, chairs, bedsteads, wardrobes, eight–day clocks, and various other articles of domestic furniture (wonderfully made, in tin, at Wolverhampton), perched among the boughs, as if in preparation for some fairy housekeeping; there were jolly, broad–faced little men, much more agreeable in appearance than many real men—and no wonder, for their heads took off, and showed them to be full of sugar–plums; there were fiddles and drums; there were tambourines, books, work–boxes, paint–boxes, sweetmeat–boxes, peep–show boxes, and all kinds of boxes; there were trinkets for the elder girls, far brighter than any grown–up gold and jewels; there were baskets and pincushions in all devices; there were guns, swords, and banners; there were witches standing in enchanted rings of pasteboard, to tell fortunes; there were teetotums, humming–tops, needle–cases, pen–wipers, smelling–bottles, conversation–cards, bouquet–holders; real fruit, made artificially dazzling with gold leaf; imitation apples, pears, and walnuts, crammed with surprises; in short, as a pretty child, before me, delightedly whispered to another pretty child, her bosom friend, “There was everything, and more.”

The Girl at the Gate is a gripping tale of mystery, secrecy, and emotional conflict by Wilkie Collins, one of the pioneers of sensation fiction. Blending psychological tension with social insight, this compelling short novel draws readers into a world where hidden motives and unspoken truths shape every human connection.

The story centers on a young woman whose quiet presence at the gate of a country estate sparks curiosity, suspicion, and intrigue. As her past slowly comes to light, long-buried secrets emerge—secrets tied to love, betrayal, social class, and the rigid moral expectations of Victorian society. What begins as a simple act of observation unfolds into a suspenseful exploration of identity and deception.

Collins masterfully builds tension through atmosphere and character rather than overt action, allowing psychological depth to drive the narrative. His keen understanding of human behavior reveals how fear, pride, and compassion influence choices, often with life-altering consequences. The novel's concise structure heightens its intensity, making every revelation feel deliberate and powerful.

The Girl at the Gate exemplifies Collins's talent for transforming ordinary settings into stages for dramatic conflict. With its sharp social commentary and subtle emotional complexity, the story offers readers a haunting glimpse into the lives of individuals caught between duty and desire.

Ideal for fans of classic mystery, Victorian literature, and character-driven suspense, The Girl at the Gate remains a timeless reminder that the most profound mysteries are often hidden in plain sight.

'I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.'

First published in 1920, and a glowing commercial success at the time of publication, This Side of Paradise a classic bildungsroman which portrays the ambition and subsequent disillusionment of the American youth at the dawn of the Jazz Age.

Set in post- World War I America, Fitzgerald's dazzling debut novel follows the life of Amory Blaine, a charming but self-absorbed Princeton student. As Amory drifts in and out of love affairs, experiences intellectual awakenings and navigates heartbreak, he becomes increasingly desperate to uncover a sense of identity and meaning. Fitzgerald captivatingly reproduces the restless spirit of the Jazz Age with lyrical prose and a profound existential yearning. Both a glittering coming-of-age narrative and a critique of a generation lost between ideals and indulgence, This Side of Paradise cemented Fitzgerald as the voice of a new generation. This audiobook edition is expertly read by Kobna-Holdbrook Smith.
