Beschreibung

New Grub Street by George Gissing New Grub Street is a novel by George Gissing published in 1891, which is set in the literary and journalistic circles of 1880s London. Gissing revised and shortened the novel for a French edition of 1901.

The story deals with the literary world that Gissing himself had experienced. Its title refers to the London street, Grub Street, which in the 18th century became synonymous with hack literature; by Gissing's time, Grub Street itself no longer existed, though hack-writing certainly did.

Its two central characters are a sharply contrasted pair of writers: Edwin Reardon, a novelist of some talent but limited commercial prospects, and a shy, cerebral man; and Jasper Milvain, a young journalist, hard-working and capable of generosity, but cynical and only semi-scrupulous about writing and its purpose in the modern (i.e. late Victorian) world.

New Grub Street opens with Milvain, an "alarmingly modern young man" driven by pure financial ambition in navigating his literary career. He accepts that he will "always despise the people [he] write[s] for," networks within the appropriate social circle to create opportunity, and authors articles for popular periodicals.

Reardon, on the other hand, prefers to write novels of a more literary bent and refuses to pander to contemporary tastes until, as a last-gasp measure against financial ruin, he attempts a popular novel. At this venture, he is of course too good to succeed, and he's driven to separate from his wife, Amy Reardon, née Yule, who cannot accept her husband's inflexibly high standards—and consequent poverty.

Eve loves living next to a forest because it means being close to her favorite baobab trees. Doing her best to imitate them, Eve practices patience. She feeds and shelters birds, just as her beloved trees do, stretching toward the sky as if her arms were branches. Eve longs to communicate with the leafy giants she admires, and while she can’t become a tree, she can contribute to the beauty of the forest—just like her dad and grandma before her—by nurturing her very own baobab seedling. A companion story to Ken Wilson-Max's Astro Girl, this thoughtful introduction to the concept of land stewardship and the joys of giving back celebrates reciprocity while honoring our connection to our own branching family trees.

Mya meets Elin or Love meets Light is a spiritually inspired novel for young people aged 14 and up. Kate Rouse wanted to share ideas from her previous book, A Spiritual Handbook for the Modern Era, in a readable and memorable form which would appeal to a younger audience.
Mya is a troubled, 14-year-old girl who is experiencing bullying at school. She meets Elin, a lovely, wise woman, in the forest near her home. Elin becomes Mya's mentor as their friendship grows through frequent rendezvous. Elin teaches Mya about coping with difficulties and becoming spiritually aware. Different chapters represent various themes as each conversation becomes a lesson on topics such as nature and the world as it is.
Many young people may feel worthless and pessimistic at times. They may experience anxiety about their own lives and the current world situation. Mya meets Elin or Love meets Light has been written to give them some insight and hope when, at times, things may only seem bleak. The book is here to amplify love and light.

    "A sure-fire hit for horse lovers!"—Kirkus

Presley and the Impossible Dream is the first book in the middle grade Windy Creek Stables series set at a rural Virginia riding school—a 21st-century Saddle Club, full of authentic detail, realistic drama, and tons of heart.

Presley's life is pretty great—she has a loving family, friends at school, and plenty of rambunctious rescue pets. There's just one little problem … She's never gotten to ride a horse. And her mom has banned her from ever, ever, ever getting on one.

And sure, Presley knows riding can be a little dangerous, and a little expensive, but she’s loved horses for as long as she can remember. She’s read every book in the library about horses and horsemanship, she watches professional horse competitions on the internet, and she’s always dreamed about learning to ride. So when she gets the opportunity to tag along with her stepdad on a vet visit to Windy Creek Stables, she jumps at the chance.

And even after a surprise run in with Harper, a popular girl who's never given Presley a second glance, Windy Creek is everything she thought it would be … except, well, maybe it's a little messy? Clean and dirty saddle pads are all jumbled together, and there’s a tangle of bridles hanging on a hook in the corner. Which gives Presley the perfect idea: In exchange for cleaning stalls and helping around the barn after school, Tracie, the stable owner, will give her lessons—if she can get her mom to agree to the deal.
