Synopsis

George Eliot's 'The Complete Novels of George Eliot' assembles the remarkable oeuvre of one of the 19th century's most influential literary figures. This collection showcases a profundity of psychological insight, character development, and social criticism, traversing themes of morality, love, and the complex web of human relationships. Through her masterful prose, Eliot employs rich narrative techniques, intertwining omniscient narration with intimate internal monologues that bring the characters to life against the backdrop of a changing Victorian society. Each novel reflects her deep engagement with philosophical ideas and the social issues of her time, rendering them not only relevant but also timeless in their exploration of individuality and community. George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, was a groundbreaking writer whose works challenged the norms of her day. Raised in a rural English family, Eliot faced societal constraints that shaped her perspectives on gender and intellectualism. Her early career as a journalist and editor provided her with a keen understanding of contemporary issues, while her personal experiences with love and loss deeply informed her narratives. Eliot's writings resonate with her progressive views on women's roles and the moral complexities of life, solidifying her legacy as a pivotal figure in literature. For readers captivated by nuanced character studies and moral dilemmas, 'The Complete Novels of George Eliot' is an indispensable addition to any literary collection. It invites the audience to delve into the intricate social fabric of Victorian England while prompting reflection on universal themes that persist today. Eliot's exploration of the human condition remains strikingly relevant, making this volume a profound journey into the heart of human experience.

How Watson Learnt the Trick is a Sherlock Holmes parody written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1924. It concerns Doctor Watson attempting to demonstrate to Holmes how he has learned the latter's "superficial trick" of logical deduction by giving a summary of Holmes' current state of mind and plans for the day ahead, only for Holmes to then reveal that every single one of Watson's deductions is incorrect.Conan Doyle was one of several authors commissioned to provide books for the library of Queen Mary's Dolls' House; others included J. M. Barrie, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and W. Somerset Maugham. Conan Doyle was provided with a book approximately 1.5" x 1.25" (3.75 cm x 3.15 cm) into which he wrote the 503-word story of How Watson Learned the Trick by hand, taking up 34 pages. The original manuscript is still part of the Dolls' House library.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

The ideas and inventions of mankind on many occasions have their roots in the minds of authors. From Interplanetary journeys, time travel, robots and cyborgs to voice control, organ transplants, mobile phones and even the internet are just some that began as mere inky black on paper as thrills and adventures.

There's a moment before the mountains go quiet—when words feel full of meaning, and a stranger's voice almost changes something. Almost. In this still, delicate story, ambition rises gently and vanishes just as softly. The path is steep, the dreams sincere, the end—unspoken, but known.
