Synopsis

George Elliot was the penname for the English novelist, poet and journalist, Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880). Although Evans was known for her work as an essayist, editor and critic, she chose to use the male pseudonym to allow for her fictional writing to be appreciated separately and taken seriously. Published in 1859, ‘Adam Bede’ is her first novel, and earned her critical acclaim. It revolves around the romantic lives of four characters in a rural community in the late 18th century. Featuring a new, specially written concise biography, this classic work is being republished in a high quality and affordable edition.

Anne Shirley plays a minor role in the book: out of the 15 stories in the collection, she narrates and stars in one (The Little Brown Book of Miss Emily), and is briefly mentioned in passing in two others (Aunt Cynthia's Persian Cat and The Return of Hester). Three other characters from the Anne books are seen in brief secondary roles: Diana Barry and Marilla Cuthbert in The Little Brown Book of Miss Emily, and Rachel Lynde in Sara's Way. As well, Matthew Cuthbert is mentioned in passing in The Conscience Case of David Bell.

Kate Chopin began writing the novel in 1897 and, after its publication, it was heavily criticized as "not wholesome", "vulgar" and even "poison" by the press of the time. The novella received such a wave of disdain that the once-popular author was forced into literary obscurity. The Awakening went out of print for more than 50 years. When it was rediscovered in the 1950s, critics were in wonder at its modern sensibility. A second edition was published in 1964.
