Synopsis

In "Life Among the Indians," George Catlin presents a vivid and immersive portrayal of Native American life during the early 19th century. Through a combination of travel writing and ethnographic observation, Catlin captures the rich tapestry of cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and daily routines of various tribes he encountered on his journeys. His artistic endeavors are notable, as he includes over 300 paintings and sketches that serve as a visual accompaniment to his prose, creating a compelling narrative that reflects both admiration and critique of American expansionism. The literary style of the book intertwines personal anecdotes and historical accounts, situating it within the broader context of Romanticism and the burgeoning interest in the American wilderness and indigenous populations. George Catlin, a self-taught artist and writer, devoted much of his life to documenting Native American cultures, driven by a passion for preserving what he perceived as a way of life rapidly vanishing due to colonization and modernization. His background as a lawyer provides a unique perspective, blending artistic observation with a keen awareness of the political and social dynamics at play. Catlin's relentless pursuit of understanding these communities stemmed from his belief that their traditions and lifestyles deserved recognition and respect amidst an encroaching industrial landscape. "Life Among the Indians" is not just a historical account but a passionate plea for the preservation of indigenous cultures. It invites readers to enter the world of Native Americans through Catlin's eyes, encouraging empathy and reflection on the consequences of American progress. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in anthropology, American history, or Native American studies, as it offers timeless insights into the delicate relationship between cultures and the impact of change.

Love’s Journey can be best described as a cross between a spoken word album and an audio book that combines poetry with emotional story telling. It’s more than a collection of poems about love put together. Poems written over a two-decade period organically come together to form a narrative of their own to reveal emotions as the true protagonist of this audio book. The commentaries for each poem help the story to unfold before your ears. They reveal some of the story behind the poems without giving away too much. They also provide clues to help solve some of the mysteries behind the events that inspired such deep emotions. Some mysteries presented are solvable while others aren’t and retain the book’s overall intrigue.
Love’s Journey tells the emotional story of my experiences with love in its various facets over the years in the form of poetry. Romantic love and heartbreak are recurring themes for most of the poems, but there are other forms of love included as well. Why write about these experiences in the form of poetry? Our individual experiences and circumstances may be something that not everyone can relate to. But emotions are universal! We all have them. My poetry is a way that I can emotionally connect with others, especially those with different life experiences. Feel your own emotions in my poetry and connect my words with your own personal experiences with love.
Each poem is enjoyable on its own, but the greatest reward is to be had when viewing them as an episode of a series from my real-life experiences. Listening to Love’s Journey more than once is required to unravel the love mystery that develops from the questions you will naturally ask yourself as you listen to it. You may even learn something from my journey that will benefit you on your very own journey of love. Take notes as you listen and compare them with the provided commentary as you embark on Love’s Journey!

The Moral Circle - Who Matters...

Today, human exceptionalism is the norm. Despite occasional nods to animal welfare, we prioritize humanity, often neglecting the welfare of a vast number of beings. As a result, we use hundreds of billions of vertebrates and trillions of invertebrates every year for a variety of purposes, often unnecessarily. We also plan to use animals, AI systems, and other nonhumans at even higher levels in the future. Yet as the dominant species, humanity has a responsibility to ask: Which nonhumans matter, how much do they matter, and what do we owe them in a world reshaped by human activity and technology?

In The Moral Circle, philosopher Jeff Sebo challenges us to include all potentially significant beings in our moral community, with transformative implications for our lives and societies.

This book explores provocative case studies such as lawsuits over captive elephants and debates over factory-farmed insects, and compels us to consider future ethical quandaries, such as whether to send microbes to new planets, and whether to create virtual worlds filled with digital minds. Taking an expansive view of human responsibility, Sebo argues that building a positive future requires the shedding of human exceptionalism and radically rethinking our place in the world.

The Overweight Mind and Body is a self-help guide to understanding the psychological issues that lead to overeating and weight gain.

The book enables the listener to discover the psychological drives that lead to unwanted weight and to find ways of meeting those drives other than with food. It introduces a simple, user-friendly theory of Transactional Analysis to promote weight-related self-awareness. She understands that, for many, carrying extra weight is emotionally and physically painful and so gently encourages listeners to explore at their own level. She uses case studies to demonstrate the many unconscious influences on one's eating and how, when people discover and resolve these influences, they no longer need extra food. Hearing them shows that "you are not alone."

This book will also be of interest to, and a useful guide for, practitioners in the caring professions who work with clients struggling with eating and overweight.
