Beschreibung

In "Young Swaigder; or, The Force of Runes, and Other Ballads," George Borrow weaves a rich tapestry of folklore and narrative poetry that captures the spirit of the Romantic era. The collection presents a fusion of mythical themes and vivid imagery, showcasing Borrow's adeptness in using balladic forms to explore cultural and supernatural elements. The title poem, centered around Swaigder, reflects Borrow's fascination with runic symbols and their mysterious powers, all while echoing the traditions of folk narratives prevalent in 19th-century literature. Borrow's language is both lyrical and robust, inviting readers to delve into a world where the mundane intertwines with the magical, revealing the lasting impact of history and culture on identity. George Borrow (1803-1881) was a fervent advocate for the Romani people and a keen linguist whose travels across Spain and Eastern Europe influenced his writing immensely. His unique perspective as an outsider helped him to blend folklore with personal experience. His affinity for ancient languages and runic inscriptions, coupled with his interest in the mystical, can be seen as a precursor to the increasingly popular themes of nationalism and folklore rehabilitation during his time, which inspired his ballads in this collection. "Young Swaigder; or, The Force of Runes, and Other Ballads" is a treasure for readers interested in the intersections of history, culture, and literature. Borrow's exploration of runes and folk narratives offers rich layers of meaning and context, making this collection not just a work of art, but also a profound commentary on the forces that shape human experience. This book is highly recommended for those who appreciate poetry steeped in myth and the historical undercurrents of European literature.

From the critically acclaimed author of In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd comes a new novel about the search for freedom and the power of community that spans decades of residents in one Florida apartment

The Helena is an art deco apartment building that has witnessed the changing face of South Miami Beach for seventy years, observing the lives housed within. Among those who have called apartment 2B home are a Cuban concert pianist who performs in a nursing home; the widow of an intelligence officer raising her young daughter alone; a man waiting on a green card marriage to run its course so that he can divorce his wife and marry his lover, all of whom live together; a Tajik building manager with a secret identity; and a troubled young refugee named Lenin. Each tenant imbues 2B with energy that will either heal or overwhelm its latest resident, Lana, a mysterious woman struggling with her own past.

Examining exile, homesickness, and displacement, The Apartment asks what—in our violent and lonely century—do we owe one another? If alone we are powerless before sorrow and isolation, it is through community and the sharing of our stories that we may survive and persevere.

In an effort not to be judged by others we sometimes become our own harshest critic and judge. We want to hold ourselves up to others in a good and inspirational, successful light and as a shining example. Naturally our very talented authors have narratives which put a different gloss on that argument.

The story begins with the narrator describing the night sky as observed over long sleepless nights from his window, in particular that of the Pole Star, Polaris, which he describes as "winking hideously like an insane watching eye which strives to convey some strange message, yet recalls nothing save that it once had a message to convey".
He then describes the night of the aurora over his house in the swamp, and how on this night he first dreamed of a city of marble lying on a plateau between two peaks, with Polaris above in the night sky. The narrator describes after a while observing motion within the houses and seeing men beginning to populate the streets, conversing to each other in language that he had never heard before but still, strangely, understood. However, before he could learn any more of this city, he awoke. Many times, he would again dream of the city and the men who dwelt within. After a while, the narrator becomes tired of merely existing as an incorporeal observer and desires to establish his place within the city, simultaneously beginning to question his conceptualization of what constituted reality and thus whether this was just a dream or whether it was real. Then, one night, while listening to discourses of those who populate the city, the narrator obtains a physical form: not as a stranger, but as an inhabitant of the city, which he now knew as Olathoë, lying on the plateau of Sarkis in the land of Lomar, which was besieged by an enemy known as the Inutos. While the other men within the city engage in combat with Inutos, the narrator is sent to a watchtower to signal if the Inutos gain access to the city itself. Within the tower, he notices Polaris in the sky and senses it as a malign presence, hearing a rhyme which appears to be spoken by the star...
