Beschreibung

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: George Bernard Shaw, Nobel Laureate in Literature and a reference in Irish literature

“Arms and the Man” is a humorous play by the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, first produced at the Avenue Theatre in 1894 and first published in 1898, in a collection of Shaw’s plays entitled “Plays Pleasant.” The play title comes from the opening words of Virgil's Aeneid, in Latin: Arma virumque cano ("Of arms and the man I sing").

“Arms and the Man” shows the futility of war and deals comedically with the hypocrisies of human nature. Set during the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian war, the play follows Raina Petkoff as she chooses between her fiancé, the rather stupid war hero Sergius Saranoff, and a cynical mercenary from the opposing army, Captain Bluntschli.

“Arms and the Man” was one of Shaw's first commercial successes.

A witty, absurdist satire of the last 500 years, Alexandra Petri's US History is the fake textbook you never knew you needed!

Alexandra Petri's US History contains a lost (invented!) history of America. (A history for people disappointed that the only president whose weird sex letters we have is Warren G. Harding.) Petri's "historical fan fiction" draws on real events and completely absurd fabrications to create a laugh-out-loud, irreverent takedown of our nation's complicated past.

On Petri's deranged timeline, John and Abigail Adams try sexting, the March sisters from Little Women are sixty feet tall, and Susan Sontag goes to summer camp. Nearly eighty short, hilarious pieces span centuries of American history and culture. Nikola Tesla's friends stage an intervention when he falls in love with a pigeon. The characters from Sesame Street invade Normandy. And Mark Twain—who famously said reports of his death had been greatly exaggerated—offers a detailed account of his undeath, in which he becomes a zombie.

This side-splitting work of historical humor shows why Alexandra Petri has been hailed as a "genius," a "national treasure," and "one of the funniest writers alive."

“Morley Swingle’s Scoundrels to the Hoosegow is not only consistently fascinating, but there is much to be learned from it about life in and out of an American courtroom. I highly recommend this engrossing book.” Vincent Bugliosi, Author of Helter Skelter
In Scoundrels to the Hoosegow, a veteran prosecutor who is also a terrific storyteller shares more than thirty legal stories drawn from real life. In cases ranging from tragic to hilarious, Morley Swingle offers a behind-the-scenes look at the justice system from crime scenes to courtrooms.
Swingle takes readers on an enjoyable romp through crime and punishment. Whether describing a drunk who frees dogs from the pound or a serial killer who saves lives in his day job, he combines true crime and legal analysis with a healthy dose of humor—and shares the occasional “Perry Mason moment."
“If Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities captured the essence of criminal practice in a major metropolis, then Scoundrels surely captures the essence of that practice in small town and rural America.” Robert H. Dierker, Jr.
“Swingle has written an interesting, easily approachable—and rare—account of daily life as a prosecuting attorney. I am unaware of any prosecutor who writes better than Swingle. The book is refreshing. Mark Twain almost certainly would have enjoyed it.” Steve Weinberg, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“Morley Swingle is a terrific writer and an even better entertainer. Lawyers and non-lawyers alike will enjoy being along for this informative and entertaining trip to the hoosegow.” Forward, Reviews of Indie Books
“Those who read Ann Rule, Joe McGinniss or John Grisham will enjoy this book.” Lithuanian Librarian
