Synopsis

In "A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge," George Berkeley challenges the prevailing materialist philosophy of his time, advocating for an idealist perspective that posits reality is fundamentally composed of ideas rather than material substance. Berkeley's distinctive literary style combines rigorous philosophical argumentation with accessible prose, making metaphysical concepts comprehensible to a broader audience. Set against the backdrop of 18th-century Enlightenment thought, this treatise engages with and responds to the skepticism of empiricism and the rationalism of Descartes, offering a coherent framework that sees perception as the basis of existence: "to be is to be perceived." Berkeley, an Irish philosopher and bishop, was deeply influenced by the works of Locke and Hobbes, leading him to question the role of the senses in understanding the material world. His experiences in the rapidly shifting intellectual landscape of the Enlightenment, coupled with his religious convictions, provided fertile ground for his arguments against materialism. By grounding his theories in the immediate experience of consciousness and divine perception, Berkeley sought to reconcile faith and reason. Readers seeking a profound exploration of metaphysical thought will find Berkeley's treatise illuminating. His arguments invite reflection on the nature of existence, perception, and the limits of human knowledge, making this work an essential read for anyone interested in philosophy, epistemology, or the evolution of modern thought.

Code White - Sounding the Alarm...

When health care workers call a Code White, it’s an emergency response for a violent incident: a call for help. But it’s one that goes unanswered in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care homes across the country. Code White exposes a shocking epidemic of violence that’s hidden in plain sight, one in which workers are bruised, battered, assaulted, and demeaned, but carry on in silence, with little recourse or support.

Researchers Margaret M. Keith and James T. Brophy lay bare the stories of over one hundred nurses and personal support workers, aides and porters, clerical workers and cleaners. The nightmarish experiences they relate are not one-off incidents, but symptoms of deep systemic flaws that have transformed health care into one of the most dangerous occupational sectors in Canada.

The same questions echo in the wake of each and every brutal encounter: Is violence and trauma really just “part of the job”? Why is this going underreported and unchecked? What needs to be done, and how?

Considering that her film career lasted just six years, it would seem as though the reputation of Grace Kelly far outweighs her actual output. Indeed, from the time of her arrival in Hollywood in 1951 through her final film, High Society, in 1956, Kelly acted in just 11 films, leaving viewers to wonder whether Kelly was still in the beginning of her career or whether High Society was a proper culmination to an extraordinarily brief stay in the film industry? Ultimately, it is might be most accurate to state that Kelly was still in the prime of her career, but it’s unclear what direction her career would have taken, as well as who inherited the void she left.
Ingrid Bergman’s fame cannot be doubted, but the international quality of her career has prevented most people from gaining a complete understanding of her filmography. Moreover, the immense success of her most famous films obscured her other achievements; one of Bergman’s persistent lamentations late in her career was that even though she appeared in other films she deemed more significant, the only film of hers that people wanted to discuss was Casablanca.
Although Fontaine and de Havilland would make history by becoming the only sisters to both win an Academy Award for Best Actress, that anecdote was just one of the various stories about the siblings that has shed light on their notoriously contentious and complicated relationship. As Fontaine once put it, “I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she'll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it!"
Kim Novak’s most famous role was as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s legendary “icy blondes” in Vertigo (1958), beguiling Jimmy Stewart’s character to the point of madness in what is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. The girl who originally wanted to be an artist reached the upper echelon of Hollywood itself before she had even turned 30.
