George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher, an anglican bishop and one of the three great British empiricists along with John Locke and David Hume. Ignored and derided in life, he is now widely re-evaluated and considered as a sort of indirect precursor of Ernst Mach, Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr for his thesis on the non-existence of matter and the impossibility of an objectively absolute time and space. His critiques of mathematics and science are among the most controversial, brilliant and revolutionary in the history of philosophy.The Berkley’s essay A Defence of Free-Thinking in Mathematics was written and published in 1735 in response to criticisms of The Analyst in Geometry no Friend to Infidelity; or a Defence of Sir Isaac Newton and the British Mathematicians, by “Philalethes Cantabrigiensis” (Dr. James Jurin, a noted Cambridge scientist and physician), and Vindication of Sir Isaac Newton’s Principles of Fluxions, by Jacob Walton. Berkeley responded to a subsequent pamphlet of Walton with Reasons for not replying to Mr. Walton’s Full Answer.

Temples in ancient Egypt were far more than mere places of worship. They stood at the very heart of Egyptian civilization, functioning as both spiritual centers and instruments of political and social order. Each temple was seen as a dwelling place for a god or goddess, and the rituals performed within their walls were believed to maintain the cosmic balance known as ma’at. The presence of a temple in a city or region signaled divine favor and legitimacy, reinforcing the bond between the gods and the ruling pharaoh.
Pharaohs were considered divine intermediaries between the gods and the people, and their authority was deeply rooted in religious belief. Temples were a direct reflection of this divine connection. Often constructed by pharaohs to honor specific deities, temples helped assert royal power and ensure harmony across the land. Through grand architecture and lavish offerings, rulers demonstrated their piety and reaffirmed their right to govern. This link between kingship and temple worship made temples central to the ideological framework of the state.
Beyond their religious significance, temples also played a pivotal role in the social life of ancient Egyptians. They were the sites of numerous festivals and ceremonial events that brought entire communities together. These occasions were marked by processions, music, dancing, and the display of sacred statues, all of which reinforced communal identity and devotion. The most prominent of these was the Opet Festival in Thebes, during which statues of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were transported from Karnak to Luxor Temple in a public procession along the Nile. Such festivals reminded people of the gods’ presence and the pharaoh’s divine role in upholding order.

That summer afternoon, I had no way of knowing the book would radically alter my existence. Yet that proved to be the case. A wind that had begun to blow from a faraway place a long time ago had finally caught up with me.
So writes folklorist José Manuel de Prada-Samper about a chance discovery more than thirty years ago of an obscure book called Specimens of Bushman Folklore in a second-hand bookshop in England.
Part historical detective story, part memoir, Fading Footprints traces the author's journey into the magical folklore of the /xam hunter-gatherers of the Upper Karoo. Through archival research and on field trips in South Africa, de Prada-Samper reveals the tragic scope of the genocide of the /xam San by European colonisers. However, he is also able to humanise the /xam as he delves into the work and lives of researchers Wilhelm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd, who recorded the stories of San prisoners in Cape Town over more than a decade in the late 1800s.
Determined to seek out the ancient folklore tales, the author travels to forgotten corners of the Northern Cape. There he learns that many stories are still told to this day by farm workers and that, contrary to common belief, the culture and traditions of South Africa's first people are still very much alive. Their footprints may have faded but they have not been erased.
