Beschreibung

George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher, an anglican bishop and one of the three great British empiricists along with John Locke and David Hume. Ignored and derided in life, he is now widely re-evaluated and considered as a sort of indirect precursor of Ernst Mach, Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr for his thesis on the non-existence of matter and the impossibility of an objectively absolute time and space. His critiques of mathematics and science are among the most controversial, brilliant and revolutionary in the history of philosophy. The Berkley’s essay A Defence of Free-Thinking in Mathematics was written and published in 1735 in response to criticisms of The Analyst in Geometry no Friend to Infidelity; or a Defence of Sir Isaac Newton and the British Mathematicians, by “Philalethes Cantabrigiensis” (Dr. James Jurin, a noted Cambridge scientist and physician), and Vindication of Sir Isaac Newton’s Principles of Fluxions, by Jacob Walton. Berkeley responded to a subsequent pamphlet of Walton with Reasons for not replying to Mr. Walton’s Full Answer.

Vulnerability Protected: Visions of a Dancing Mind invites readers to reconsider what it truly means to be vulnerable—and why it matters now more than ever. Vulnerability, writes Carol Smaldino, is not a soft cliché but a profound state of openness that touches every part of our being. It is rarely smooth or easy. On the contrary, genuine vulnerability depends on a sense of safety, both physical and emotional, and becomes a gateway to repair and reconnection when we inevitably falter.
In this new work, Smaldino explores how vulnerability is a central ingredient in empathy—for ourselves, for each other, and even for the natural world. When we allow ourselves to feel deeply into our own experience, we become more able to extend that same depth of understanding outward, bridging the gaps that so often divide us.
Against the backdrop of a world marked by polarization and fracture, Vulnerability Protected argues that humanizing ourselves and one another is an urgent task. What we fear or disown in ourselves, Smaldino notes, we are prone to hate, degrade, or project onto others.
Vulnerability Protected offers a path toward making vulnerability authentic, grounded, and transformative—something that can be protected rather than exploited, honored rather than shamed.
Carol Smaldino, LCSW, is a psychotherapist with forty years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Her work focuses on the deeper and often hidden parts of the psyche, including the “shadow” emotions we tend to reject or bury. Known for her combination of quick wit, sustained curiosity, and a serious, compassionate approach, she has long been committed to integrating the personal and the political in her writing and speaking.

Combining leading theories of psychology and behavior with case studies and practical advice, National Geographic’s Mind explores the question we all enjoy asking: Who am I?
A companion to National Geographic’s Body and Brain, this reference explores today’s theories of personality, mixing scientific theory with an underlying message: by knowing more about your own psychology, you can have a better life.
Chapters start with the anatomy, evolution, and development of the human brain, then move into such areas as intuition, creativity, motivation, faith, and ethics—all facets of a unique personality. Interesting scenarios of mental health and mental deviance make for a lively, readable narrative that combines today’s leading theories in the science of the mind and personality with life-enhancing questions, quizzes, practices, and tools for self-discovery.
An entertaining book about science, Mind connects with the listener in a very personal and ultimately helpful way.

What does it truly mean to be "immoral"? Is it a flaw to be conquered, or an intrinsic part of our humanity? In this bold and expansive work, A.A. Castor embarks on a sweeping investigation into the roots of our so-called forbidden impulses. Drawing on vivid historical accounts, cutting-edge psychology, and illuminating insights from the animal kingdom, Castor unravels the stories behind behaviors that societies have labeled as taboo or deviant. From ancient rituals to modern counterculture movements, from primal instincts honed by evolution to the ever-shifting moral boundaries shaped by media and technology, this book offers a comprehensive portrait of how "immorality" has both challenged and enriched our collective journey.
Through thoughtful analysis and engaging narrative, readers are invited to confront their own assumptions about right and wrong. Rather than condemning our darkest desires, Castor demonstrates how risk-taking, rebellion, and raw self-expression can foster innovation and self-discovery. By weaving together perspectives from philosophy, social science, and personal reflection, We Desire to Be Immoral ultimately urges a more nuanced understanding of human nature—one that embraces our imperfections, values empathy and connection, and dares us to celebrate the liberating power of authenticity. Whether you're intrigued by the hidden forces behind social norms or seeking a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the human spirit, this book is an invitation to step beyond the ordinary and revel in the full spectrum of who we are.
