Beschreibung

A relaxing holiday is cut short by murder for the Scotland Yard detective in a mystery by “one of [the genre’s] subtlest and wittiest practitioners” (The New York Times). Set on having a relaxing holiday in Tilsey, Detective Inspector Littlejohn once again finds himself pulled into a baffling investigation. When local judge Nicholas Crake is found dead in his home, Littlejohn and his partner Sergeant Cromwell have the difficult task of sifting out the murderer from a mass of feuding neighbors, friends, and family. Could Crake’s faithless wife have had the means? Or his strange brother-in-law? Or what about the superintendent, who seems to be doing more to impede the case than solve it? Faced with family secrets, old grudges, and more than one dead body, Littlejohn must unravel a web of deceit to get to the bottom of this case.

“If one man does not make a move, the other must, and by permitting the adversary to make the attack, one learns something about him.” — Hercule Poirot
    The number 4
Scribbled, over and over again. There were tens, maybe even hundreds… all 4’s.
A sheet of paper, almost drenched in ink, with only the number 4 written on it — What could it mean?
Hercule Poirot was a detective who was good at his job. He was a skilled detective who had come to lament that all his cases thus far were, quite frankly, tame and boring.
He wanted an adventure. A thrilling case where he would have no other choice but to risk everything to solve it.
And that’s exactly what he’s about to get.
Poirot finds himself an uninvited guest, standing at his doorway and absolutely caked in dust. All Poirot could do was exchanged an alarmed look with the mystery man, before the guest collapses on the floor.
The only clue was that all the man would utter were Poirot’s name and address, before hastily scribbling out the number 4, again, and again, and again.
This collection of short stories by popular English mystery author, Agatha Christie, are about to send you of on a wild goose chase alongside Private Investigator Hercule Poirot. Enter a world full of secrets and espionage and quickly learn that, sometimes, to uncover the truth, you must be willing to risk your life.

Spencer Quinn’s A Farewell to Arfs is a return to the adventurous New York Times and USA Today bestselling series that Stephen King calls “without a doubt the most original mystery series currently available.”

Chet the dog, “the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction” (Boston Globe) and his human partner PI Bernie Little are back again, and this time they’re entangled in a web of crime unlike anything they’ve ever seen before.

Their next door neighbor, Mr. Parsons, thought he was doing the right thing by loaning his ne’er do well son, Billy, some money to help get himself settled. But days later, Mr. Parsons has discovered that his entire life savings is gone. Valley PD is certain this is an impersonation scam, but Bernie isn’t so sure.

With Mrs. Parsons in the hospital and Billy nowhere to be found, it’s up to Chet and Bernie to track Billy down and get to the bottom of things—before it’s too late.

    The Absence of Mr Glass

    G. K. Chesterton

A fun-filled little story by Chesterton, the father of the paradox and perhaps as skilled a popular storyteller as any of the Edwardian Era. It is always a delight to read any of these simple Father Brown stories because while they are worthy detective tales in their own right, they are also ingeniously constructed parables which teach us, not too didactically, how not to assume or judge things prematurely. Chesterton's writing is witty and concise and yet also vivid and nuanced and Father Brown himself is a charmingly congenial character worth rooting for every time.
Father Brown is a short, nondescript Catholic Priest with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella who has an uncanny insight into human evil. His methods, unlike those of his near contemporary Sherlock Holmes, although based on observation of details often unnoticed by others, tended to be intuitive rather than deductive. Although clearly devout, he always emphasizes rationality: despite his religiousness and his belief in God and miracles, he manages to see the perfectly ordinary, natural explanation of the problem. He is a devout, educated and "civilized" clergyman, who is totally familiar with contemporary and secular thought and behavior. His character was though to be based on Father John O'Connor (1870 - 1952), a parish priest in Bradford, Yorkshire.
