Beschreibung

A murder in plain sight brings Scotland Yard to investigate family secrets in a sleepy English town in this mystery from the beloved series.

In the close-knit community of Enderby, Ned Bunn wasn’t what you’d call popular. In fact, there were some fellow residents who wished him dead. But when Bunn is found dead on the doorstep of his own shop, the town is in shock.

As Inspector Littlejohn of Scotland Yard investigates, he finds more than typical small-town animosity in the victim’s past. Surprising revelations about Bunn and his family bring new leads—and new suspects—to this unexpectedly baffling case.

The first English-language story collection from "one of Iran's most important living fiction writers" (Guardian)

In Seasons of Purgatory, the fantastical and the visceral merge in tales of tender desire and collective violence, the boredom and brutality of war, and the clash of modern urban life and rural traditions. Mandanipour, banned from publication in his native Iran, vividly renders the individual consciousness in extremis from a variety of perspectives: young and old, man and woman, conscript and prisoner. While delivering a ferocious social critique, these stories are steeped in the poetry and stark beauty of an ancient land and culture.

Helen Stoner worries her stepfather may be trying to kill her after he contrives to move her to the bedroom where her sister had died two years earlier, shortly before her wedding. Stoner is herself now engaged, and Holmes learns that her stepfather's annuity (from the estate of his wife—Stoner's mother) would be greatly reduced if either sister married.

During a late-night investigation of the bedroom, Holmes and Watson discover a dummy bell-pull near a ventilator. As they lie in wait a whistle sounds, then a snake appears through the ventilator. Holmes attacks the snake with his riding crop; it retreats to the next room, where it attacks and kills Stoner's stepfather.
