    Read by the author.
Discover the antidote to cynicism and despair in this dynamic, revelatory, hope-inducing exploration of the extraordinary work and extraordinary people who are transforming communities around the country--motivated by faith.
The mother of a man with autism manages a network of group homes through her local Greek Orthodox congregation. The director of an Islamic cultural center hosts a national interfaith conference to foster better relationships with the Jewish community. A student counselor starts a free immigration services program through her church. Sometimes we forget that good is not only happening in America, it is flourishing--in the fertile soil of our churches, synagogues, and mosques.
Few people are better poised to speak to the value of religious institutions in civic life than former Ohio governor and presidential candidate John Kasich, who is both a public servant and a man of faith. In Heaven Help Us, Kasich reminds us through gripping stories that faith communities are vital to healthy communities and our nation. Heaven Help Us offers:Unforgettable stories of people making an extraordinary difference because of their faith communitiesInsights into what sets faith institutions that transform their neighborhoods apart from those that don'tPractical ideas for making positive changes in our own communitiesHope to dream about what is possible in our country instead of what is impossibleEncouragement that religion can bring us together rather than break us apart

As Kasich shows us, faith institutions can magnify the power of an individual in ways that almost always exceed the expectations of the person who jump-started the initiative in the first place. More than a collection of "feel-good" stories, Heaven Help Us reminds us of the resourcefulness and ingenuity of our fellow congregants and religious leaders that make it possible to turn our good intentions into even better outcomes. Good is happening in our country. Join in.

In the process of becoming one of the most famous Americans of her era, Susan B. Anthony’s legacy has overshadowed many of her contemporaries who were also active in the fight for civil rights. Among them, few led as interesting or progressive a life as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who grew up in a family that encouraged every kind of pursuit for girls and provided an educational foundation that would propel Walker in many fields. In addition to becoming a surgeon, Walker and her family eschewed conventional dress styles in favor of being comfortable, doing so in an era that ensured she would be ridiculed for it. Undeterred, Walker’s work took her across enemy lines during the Civil War, leading to her arrest in the South and to her recognition as one of only eight civilians in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor for rendering "valuable service to the Government, and her efforts have been earnest and untiring in a variety of ways."
Although her legacy has not endured quite as much as some of the other activists who fought for civil rights in the late 19th century, she has been remembered and celebrated in the past few decades, including the unveiling of a giant statue of her in her hometown of Oswego, New York. She has also been commemorated with a stamp, and in the near future, a U.S. Army fort may be named after her in recognition of her service during the Civil War.

Feeding the Nine Billion: Strategies for Global Food Security is a clear, practical, and hopeful roadmap for ensuring that every person can access nutritious food in a warming, crowded, and rapidly changing world. Written in simple, bookish language and grounded in real-world experience, it moves from the scale of a single farm to global markets and institutions, showing how the pieces fit together to create resilient, fair, and nourishing food systems. It opens with the central challenge—feeding a projected nine billion people—by unpacking what food security truly means: not only producing enough calories, but guaranteeing equitable access and balanced diets that support health, dignity, and opportunity.
The book surveys the current landscape of hunger and malnutrition, explaining why people go hungry even when the world grows enough food. It explores how conflict, climate shocks, poverty, weak infrastructure, and inequality disrupt access to meals, and it highlights the quiet crisis of hidden hunger—micronutrient deficiencies that limit learning, productivity, and well-being. With this foundation, the narrative turns to solutions that work on the ground: sustainable agriculture practices that build living soils, conserve water, reduce waste, and weave biodiversity into the heart of farming; and innovations in crop science, breeding, and biotechnology that add resilience to heat, drought, pests, and disease while improving taste, nutrition, and storage life.
