  Alun Lewis was born on the 1st July 1915 in Cwmaman in South Wales. 
  He studied history at Aberystwyth and Manchester Universities before beginning a career as a teacher. 
  In 1940, despite his pacifism, he enlisted to serve in the Royal Engineers and later received a commission in the South Wales Borderers. 
  His first poetry collection ‘Raider’s Dawn’ was published in 1942 as was his short story collection ‘The Last Inspection’.  Both brought him critical acclaim and an admiring audience. 
  Later that year he was posted to India where his conscience and morality wrestled with suffering and poverty that so was so evident all around him. 
  Alun Lewis died on the 5th March 1944 in Rakhine, Myanmar, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, that was officially declared accidental.  He was 28.  
  His second poetry collection, ‘Ha! Ha! Among the Trumpets’, was published posthumously in 1945.

  William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on the 23rd February 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.   
  He was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895.  As a sociologist his writing, including the classic 1903 work ‘The Souls of Black Folk’, introduced the concept of "double consciousness"—the sense of 'twoness' felt by Black Americans—and his famous statement, "The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line." 
  Du Bois was a seminal figure in the long fight for the full and immediate introduction of Civil Rights.  He was the only Black co-founder of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and served as the editor of its influential magazine, ‘The Crisis’, which was not only a widely applauded platform for protest against segregation but a valuable literary space for black authors to gain an audience for their stories. 
  As well as writing widely and prolifically in non-fiction he also wrote novels and short story fiction, many of which were surprising in their choice of genre, including science fiction. 
  Although he embraced socialism and later Communism he became further disillusioned with the slow progress of the US Government to act on its promises and renounced his American citizenship and moved to Ghana in 1961. 
  W E B du Bois deid in Accra, Ghana on the 27th August 1963, one day before the March on Washington.  He was 95.

  Katherine O'Flaherty was born on the 8th February 1850 in St Louis, Missouri to parents of French and Irish descent. 
  At age 5, she was sent to the Sacred Heart Academy and, apart from a 2 year period at home when her father died, remained there until graduating in 1868.  Whilst there she began writing and became an avid reader of almost anything that crossed her path.   
  Kate married Oscar Chopin in 1870 and the couple moved to New Orleans, and later to the rural setting of Cloutierville, Louisiana to raise their 6 children.  
  In 1882 her husband died leaving her in a deep trench of debt.  Despite her best efforts to turn the businesses around they were sold, and she moved the family back to St Louis and the financial help of her mother.  Sadly, her mother died within the year.  Kate, now struggling with depression, pushed herself to write and gained a local reputation as a writer of short stories that captured the local color and vibrancy of her surroundings.  
  By the early 1890’s her short stories were published nationally.  With this widespread audience also came negative reviews, controversy, and cries of immorality as themes such as interracial relationships, the rights of women and other burning issues of the day were written about. 
  Despite the criticism, which unnerved her, she continued to write though in the main her works, around 100 short stories and two novels, were not attributed with any literary worth. 
  Kate Chopin died from a brain haemorrhage in St Louis Missouri on the 22nd of August 1904.  She was 54. 
  For much of the 20th Century her work was forgotten and out of print.  It was only in early 1970’s, with the rise of feminism and the call for a more just society that she was given the status her works had long described and shone a literary light at.  She is now safely revered as one of America’s great authors.

  Charles Dickens is a name that dominates the landscape of English literature.  From his early years of hardship he rose to become one of the great novelists of any age.  But amongst his other talents were that of short story writer, turning his pen to many subjects and genres as well as travel articles, speaking tours and as an advocate for social justice.  He was also amongst the first to commercialise Christmas and a publisher of various periodical magazines for which he also contributed and encouraged the talents of very many others. 
  Dickens died at only 58 leaving an incredible legacy that is still admired to this day.
