'A novel you can read in one sitting that will stay with you forever' Karen Russell
'Very funny, very sad, very sharp, and completely delightful' Elif Batuman
'A classic American road adventure. Gary Shteyngart keeps getting better' Literary Review
'Genius... A miracle' Washington Post

The Bradford-Shmulkin family is falling apart. A very modern blend of Russian, Jewish, Korean, and New England WASP, they love each other deeply but the pressures of life in an unstable America are fraying their bonds. There's Daddy, a struggling, cash-thirsty editor whose Russian heritage gives him a surprising new currency in the upside-down world of 21st century geopolitics; his wife, Anne Mom, a progressive, underfunded blue blood from Boston who's barely holding the household together; their son, Dylan, whose blond hair and Mayflower lineage give him pride of place in the newly forming American political order; and, above all, the young Vera, half-Jewish, half-Korean, and wholly original.

Observant, sensitive, and always writing down new vocabulary words, Vera wants only three things in life: a friend at school; Daddy and Anne Mom to stay together; and to meet her birth mother, Mom Mom, who will at last tell Vera the secret of who she really is and how to ensure love's survival in this great, mad, imploding world.

Both biting and deeply moving, Vera, or Faith is a boldly imagined story of family and country told through the clear and wondrous eyes of a child. With a nod to What Maisie Knew, Henry James's classic story of parents, children, and the dark ironies of a rapidly transforming society, Gary Shteyngart's newest novel is among his best and shows why, in the words of Jonathan Safran Foer, he is 'a national treasure'.

A fun writing exercise (started when I should’ve been working on my Edinburgh Fringe show) that somehow turned into a proper thing. I began jotting down names, staring out of the window, and listing all the stuff that gets on my nerves (cooking, cars, jogging). And now, here we are: a lovely—if I may say so myself—collection of short stories about normal people struggling with really basic things.
Perfect toilet reading, perhaps, given how short they are. Or something to dip in and out of while you're parked up in Waitrose car park waiting for your mum to do her shopping.
Features three swear words and possibly a couple of typos.
    About the author
Paul S. Richards is a writer based in Cambridge, England. He’s 44 and often talks about himself in the third person. Over the past 20 years, he’s taken more than thirty plays to the Edinburgh Fringe, earning a fair bit of acclaim along the way—most notably for Harvey Greenfield is Running Late, which was later developed into a feature film.
He drinks too much coffee and is determined to grow a beard one day.

The Pickwick Papers was Charles Dickens' first novel. Because of his success with Sketches by Boz published in 1836 Dickens was asked by the publisher Chapman & Hall to supply descriptions to explain a series of comic "cockney sporting plates" by illustrator Robert Seymour,[and to connect them into a novel. The book became Britain's first real publishing phenomenon, with bootleg copies, theatrical performances, Sam Weller joke books, and other merchandise. On its cultural impact, Nicholas Dames in The Atlantic writes, “Literature” is not a big enough category for Pickwick. It defined its own, a new one that we have learned to call “entertainment.” Published in 19 issues over 20 months, the success of The Pickwick Papers popularized serialised fiction and cliffhanger endings.Seymour's widow claimed the idea for the novel was originally her husband's, but Dickens strenuously denied any specific input in his preface to the 1867 edition: "Mr. Seymour never originated or suggested an incident, a phrase, or a word, to be found in the book."Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read today.
