Beschreibung

With uncanny wit, inventive beauty, and numinous surprise, The Most Charming Creatures explores the contemporary and its language, considering our wonder, sorrow, bewilderment, anxiety, and tenderness. While these poems energize and connect and “turn the paren- / theses inside out so that / we mean everything,” they are also alive to the alluring complicity of language and its duplicity and deceptions. “This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but / while we watch.”

A follow-up to the award-winning author’s acclaimed selected poems, this new collection continues Barwin’s examination of the possibilities of the poem: a celebration, a story, an investigation, a riff, a word machine, a parable, a transformation. But what are the “most charming creatures” of the title? In 1862, scientific illustrator Ernst Haeckel termed radiolarians (ancient single-celled organisms with mineral skeletons) “the most charming creatures,” but here Barwin turns the microscope around to consider something just as strange and mysterious: language, our culture, and the self. From microorganisms, onion rings, grief, and Gerard Manley Hopkins to beetles, neoliberalism, sandwiches, Martin Luther, and stand-up comedy, he offers: “it’s a miracle that we’ve survived / it’s a miracle that we’ve survived at all.”

Sand and Foam by Kahlil Gibran is a collection of brief aphorisms and poetic reflections that distill profound spiritual and philosophical insights into simple, memorable language. Written in Gibran’s characteristic lyrical style, the book explores themes such as love, freedom, suffering, joy, solitude, faith, and the search for inner truth. Rather than presenting a continuous narrative, each passage stands alone like a grain of sand, inviting quiet contemplation and personal interpretation. The tone is meditative and symbolic, offering timeless wisdom that encourages readers to look inward, question appearances, and discover meaning in both life’s beauty and its hardships.

In 1912 a translation into English by the author was published in 1912, and led to his being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.The Indian sage, Paramahansa Yogananda, who was a friend and admirer of Tagore, made the following comment on his poetry: "The beauty of his lines, to me, lies in his art of referring to God in nearly every stanza, yet seldom mentioning the sacred Name. 'Drunk with the bliss of singing,' Tagore writes, 'I forget myself and call thee friend who art my lord.'"Production copyright 2024 Voices of Today

"One NIght" Is an original one act play written by Christopher Swann that lasts just over 75 minutes.
On one night in November 1920 two Officers were tasked with choosing the "Unknown Warrior" who was to be laid to rest in Westminster Abbey. They entered a small chapel in Northern France where six coffins of the unidentified military dead rested, having been brought from the battlefields of Belgium and France. The Officers entered at dusk to choose one from those six coffins and left the chapel at dawn. No one knows what happened that night and what kept the two Officers - a General and a Colonel who had both served in and survived World War One - in the chapel and why they stayed the whole night. This play is an imagining of that One Night and the dilemma that faced them in making the choice. As they consider which coffin to pick and mull over the randomness that has brought these six unknown soldiers to the chapel, the voices of men of other ranks and a bereaved Mother are heard - all are ghosts who died in the Great war. The play has received professional performances in the UK. This audio book is a Radio version of "One Night" which is a play in one act.It was recorded in an audio studio in Birmingham with a professional cast and directed and written by the award winning Director Christopher Swann. The Script of the theatrical version of the play is published on Lulu.com at
