  Science, better diet, advanced medicines are all part of a process that in the modern age keep most of us going to a ripe old age. 
   
  In previous times some diseases could only be slowed and not defeated. There toil of relentless attack on our physical forms brought misery and decay.   
   
  Add to this that within our number some will self-destruct, demons will pursue their inner thoughts and life will be too painful to bear. Some may shuffle off the mortal coil for no discernible reason, but life will end early, they will not take up their three-score year and ten. 
   
  In this collection of short stories some of our most popular and well-known authors are grouped together with an unfortunate tag: dead at 46. 
   
  These authors are not run-of-the-mill or ten a penny; many are literary leviathans who left enduring works of literature and sadly may have left us many more had they lived. We will never know. 
   
  Death for these authors was usually due to many health issues but primarily:— 
  Oscar Wilde — Meningitis 
  George Gissing — General ill health left him unable to recover from a chill  
  H P Lovecraft — Cancer 
  Mary Webb — Unknown but she had been in increasingly bad health for some time 
  Perceval Gibbon — Cause of death unknown

  Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English author, born in one of the "Five Towns" which form the background of so many of his witty stories.When Professor Malpetant pays an unannounced visit to his sister, Muriel, he finds nobody at home. Both Muriel and her maid, Annie, have gone out, though he finds the door unlocked and takes the opportunity to take a look around the house.In Muriel's bedroom he uses the telephone to call the station and arrange his onward journey to Bristol before setting off for the station. It is only when he is steaming on his way to Bristol that he realises he has left his umbrella in Muriel's bedroom.The unexplained presence of a man's umbrella in Muriel's room plunges the entire household and neighbourhood into crisis. Rumours fly, suspicions and accusations are at first whispered...and later hurled.No umbrella ever caused so much trouble to so many people.

  In July 1879, Robert Louis Stevenson left Scotland to meet his future wife in her native California. Leaving by ship from Glasgow, Scotland, he determined to travel in steerage class to see how the working classes fared. At the last minute he was convinced by friends to purchase a ticket one grade above the lowest price, for which he was later thankful after seeing the conditions in steerage, but he still lived among the 'lower' classes. His comments on the experience make interesting reading. His father however was so shocked at the thought of his son associating with people 'beneath him' that the work was not published for a number of years,

Agnes experiences the difficulty of reining in spoiled children and how wealth can corrupt morals.

  Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an 1886 Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. It follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London-based legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend Dr. Henry Jekyll and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde. 
   
  Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of the most famous pieces of English literature and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. The novella has also had a sizable impact on popular culture, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.
