Terrance McKenna's captivating lecture, he delves into his theory of the universe as an engine geared towards generating and preserving novelty, with an escalation in novelty corresponding to an increase in complexity. Drawing from the Chinese divination text, the I-Ching, which he views as a tool rather than the focal point, McKenna elaborates on the concept of the time wave. Time, he proposes, manifests as a colossal wave, gathering density and intensity until its culmination, fueled by novelty in various forms such as information, incidents, and events.

Throughout history, this wave of novelty has propelled progress and evolution, with each novelty birthing further innovations in a fractal-like manner. McKenna observes an exponential acceleration in novelty in recent times, with the pace of change surpassing anything witnessed in previous eras. The rapid advancements in technology and discovery over the past century exemplify this phenomenon, leaving humanity pondering the trajectory of the future.

McKenna's thought-provoking ideas challenge conventional notions of time and evolution, prompting speculation on the ultimate culmination of the time wave's journey. Regardless of one's agreement or disagreement with his theories, McKenna's discourse captivates with its depth, originality, and provocative insights into the nature of existence and progress.

It has been famously pointed out that the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, but it was also not an empire in the sense people expect when hearing the term. In theory, the emperor was the highest prince in Christendom, and his dominion extended the length and breadth of Western Europe. The empire had been created by the papacy when Pope Leo III famously crowned the supposedly unwitting Charlemagne in Saint Peter’s Basilica, intending to recreate the Western Roman Empire. In truth, the imperial power did not extend beyond central Europe, which by the beginning of the 16th century included Germany, northern Italy, and the Netherlands. Even in these lands, however, the emperor struggled to command obedience. His dominion over northern Italy was theoretical only, the cities of the Netherlands were deeply conscious of their ancient rights and privileges, and Germany had long ceased to be compliant. The latter had become a collection of principalities, dukedoms and bishoprics which vied with each other and pursued their own agendas. They were, however, united in only one sense: denying the emperor power and resisting attempts to centralize the government.
The clergy occupied a privileged place in medieval society. Europe had inherited Christianity from the Roman Empire, and the concept of a united Christendom and empire were practically synonymous. Indeed, there was no real consciousness of the Roman Empire ever having ended. After the Western Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century, the Germanic rulers of Western Europe continued to recognize the Eastern Emperor in Constantinople until Charlemagne, and after the dissolution of the Frankish Empire, the imperial seat was transferred to Otto I, King of East Francia in modern Germany.
By the late 10th century, however, the emperor’s reach was rarely felt beyond Germany and northern Italy, and the question of who was supposed to be the imperial head was unresolved.

This edition brings Dewey’s educational theory into sharp focus, framing his two classic works by frank assessments, past and present, of the practical applications of Dewey’s ideas. In addition to a substantial introduction in which Philip W. Jackson explains why more of Dewey’s ideas haven’t been put into practice, this edition restores a “lost” chapter, dropped from the book by Dewey in 1915.

    Womanish Theology - Discovering...

Khristi Lauren Adams's faith was first shaped by her experiences as a Black girl—learning about Scripture from her grandmother, Mama Hattie; "playing church" with her seven cousins over summer vacation; and grieving the murder of her sixteen-year-old friend when she was just fifteen.

In Womanish Theology, Adams reflects on those experiences, inviting listeners to learn from a new perspective and guiding them to a deeper understanding of their own spirituality.

This groundbreaking book introduces a new branch of theological thought Adams calls womanish, as a play on the womanist tradition (the theology of Black womanhood). "Womanish," remembers Adams, is a term Black mothers used for young girls as they grew more interested in doing grown-up things. Adams draws on her own life story as well as the life stories of other Black girls to explore theological concepts such as Scripture, theodicy, salvation, prayer, neighborly love, and the image of God.

Through this journey, listeners will learn that theology is for everyone and that the whole community of God can learn from the spiritual insights of Black girls.
