Sinossi

In "By England's Aid; Or, the Freeing of the Netherlands, 1585-1604," G. A. Henty crafts a vivid historical narrative that immerses readers in the tumultuous events of the Dutch struggle for independence from Spanish rule. Through the eyes of young Harry, the protagonist, Henty employs an engaging third-person perspective, blending historical fact with imaginative storytelling. The novel is meticulously researched, echoing Henty's characteristic style of weaving adventure with authentic historical events, encapsulating the passion and complexities of the Dutch Revolt during the late 16th century. G. A. Henty, a prolific British author known for his historical novels for boys, was deeply influenced by his own Victorian context, wherein imperialistic views and tales of heroism were celebrated. His experiences as a war correspondent during the latter half of the 19th century fueled his fascination with military history and valorous deeds. Henty's commitment to showcasing figures of bravery and the moral undertones within the grand tapestry of history is prominent throughout this work. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in 19th-century historiography, young adult literature, and the dynamics of European conflicts. Henty's intricate narrative not only entertains but also educates, offering insight into the resilience of a nation and the universal themes of freedom and sacrifice.

We are told that in Tartary, each native makes the iron he needs, just as every household would make its own bread. The furnace is a very small affair, not holding more than three pounds of ore. This is filled with ore and charcoal. The bellows are used, and after the charcoal is all burned out, the result is a small piece of spongy iron, which needs only repeated heating and hammering to be made serviceable.
Primitive furnaces, on a somewhat larger scale, have been discovered in Switzerland. Here, the excavation was made in the side of a hill, and a rude, dome-shaped chimney built over it. We must not forget that our task ends where the historian's begins. The use of iron did not long precede history, so we have but little to describe as to the customs and manners of life during the prehistoric Iron Age.

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire would also use Constantinople as the capital of its empire after their conquest effectively ended the Byzantine Empire, and thanks to its strategic location, it has been a trading center for years and remains one today under the Turkish name of Istanbul. The end of the Byzantine Empire had a profound effect not only on the Middle East but Europe as well. Constantinople had played a crucial part in the Crusades, and the fall of the Byzantines meant that the Ottomans now shared a border with Europe. The Ottomans were viewed as a threat by the predominantly Christian continent to their west, and it took little time for different European nations to start clashing with them. In fact, the Ottomans would clash with Russians, Austrians, Venetians, Polish, and more before collapsing as a result of World War I, when they were part of the Central Powers.
Of course, it wasn’t an accident that Constantinople survived for so long. Since ancient times, settlements have been protected by walls, ranging from simple earth fortifications, mounds, and ditches to sophisticated structures incorporating gates and watchtowers. The globe is replete with famous walls such as that built by Hadrian in the north of England and the Great Wall of China, which spans hundreds of miles across a vast landscape. Some of the earliest evidence of defensive walling can be found in Africa, and the Bible includes references to the walls of Jericho, dating back to at least the 8th century BCE. Walls have protected great civilizations and occasionally been their downfall, and the Byzantine Empire relied on Constantinople’s extensive, sophisticated walls, among the greatest engineering achievements of the ancient world and Early Middle Ages, to survive as long as it did.
