Synopsis

The Gambler is a short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky about a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general. The novella reflects Dostoyevsky's own addiction to roulette, which was in more ways than one the inspiration for the book: Dostoyevsky completed the novella under a strict deadline to pay off gambling debts.

The first-person narrative is told from the point of view of Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor working for a Russian family living in a suite at a German hotel. The patriarch of the family, The General, is indebted to the Frenchman Des Grieux and has mortgaged his property in Russia to pay only a small amount of his debt. Upon learning of the illness of his wealthy aunt, "Grandmother", he sends streams of telegrams to Moscow and awaits the news of her demise. His expected inheritance will pay his debts and gain Mademoiselle De Cominges's hand in marriage.

One day while Polina and Alexei are on a walk they see a Baron and Baroness. Polina dares him to insult the aristocratic couple and he does so with little hesitation. This sets off a chain of events that details Madame de Cominges's interest in the General and gets Alexei fired as tutor of the General's children. Shortly after this, Grandmother shows up and surprises the whole party of debtors and indebted. She tells them all that she knows all about the General's debt and why the French man and woman are waiting around the suite day after day. She leaves the party of death-profiteers by saying that none of them are getting any of her money. She then asks Alexei to be her guide around the town famous for its healing waters and infamous for its casino where the tables are stacked with piles of gold; she wants to gamble.

Alexei starts to gamble to survive. One day he passes Mr. Astley on a park bench in Bad Homburg and has a talk with him. He finds out from Astley that Polina is in Switzerland and actually does love him. Astley gives him some money but shows little hope that he will not use it for gambling. Alexei goes home dreaming of going to Switzerland the next day and recollects what made him win at the roulette tables in the past.

All I’d wanted for as long as I could remember was a woman to love, a soulmate to live with in contentment for the rest of my days: friend, lover, companion, mother to our children.
Time was running out: I was getting old. Next year I would be eighteen.
Barry Goldman is a sensitive boy. He’s being primed to run the family business but has discovered a talent for making audiences laugh at his silly poems.
At last, he has found something that might make him attractive to girls – in particular, Harriet Fink - but there’s not much call for delicate, earnest poets in the 1970s comedy world of hot-panted dolly birds and battle-axe mothers-in-law.
Then one night he sees Kris Dean on stage and understands that the world of comedy is about to change forever.
Stand Up, Barry Goldman – like Elena Ferrante, but with jokes - is the debut novel of David J. Cohen, stand-up comedian and writer best known as the creator of dozens of songs for multi-BAFTA winning hit TV show Horrible Histories, and less well known as lead singer in the world’s first Jewish heavy metal band, Guns’n’Moses.
"Funny and fascinating, a lovely tale." Jo Brand
"Powerfully funny, often moving... Dave has created the Jewish Adrian Mole of alternative comedy." David Quantick

What happens when obsession refuses to die?
When photographer Alex steps into an abandoned house searching for artistic inspiration, he begins hearing whispers that should not exist. At first, they feel like echoes of imagination—but soon, his camera captures things no human eye can see. Faces in the dust. Shadows that speak. Memories trapped inside photographs.
As Alex begins communicating with a restless spirit bound by unfinished ambition, he discovers a terrifying truth: passion does not end with death. Art can become a prison. And some souls refuse to move on until they are remembered.
With every image captured, the bond between the living and the dead grows stronger—pulling Alex toward a psychological and supernatural reckoning that blurs the line between creativity and obsession.
The Last Exposure: An Interview with the Dead is a slow-burn paranormal horror audiobook that explores:Haunted spaces and lingering spiritsThe dark side of artistic obsessionConversations beyond the veilThe cost of unfinished dreams
